CohenThe once trusted aide and lawyer to Donald Trump, Michael Cohen, is testifying before Congress. It is anticipated that his testimony will paint a dark picture of the character of the president and criminal conduct. Nevertheless, Republicans are discrediting Cohen by reminding people he is going to prison in two months for lying to Congress.

Cohen opened by stating that the president is a racist, a con man, and a cheat. He stated that Trump did not directly tell Cohen to lie to Congress, but as a presidential candidate, Trump lied to the American people when he denied business dealings with Russia.

The committee was provided with a copy of a $35,000 personal check from Trump that Cohen claimed was part of hush money payments to cover up an alleged affair with a former porn start.

The former Trump aide and lawyer said that he did not have any evidence of collusion with Russia during the presidential campaign, however, he believes that Trump knew about the meeting his son had with a Russian lawyer who was offering “dirt” on Hillary Clinton

Additionally, Cohen stated that he was present when Roger Stone called Trump during the campaign to let him know that the stolen Democratic emails would soon be made public to damage Clinton’s campaign.

According to The New York Times, “Mr. Cohen painted a vivid and damning portrait of Mr. Trump as someone who frequently used racist language, lied about his wealth, and committed criminal conduct even after he took office.”

Within that story, Cohen told of Trump’s role in a scheme created in the run-up to the 2016 election to make $130,000 to keep Stormy Daniels (Stephanie Clifford), a porn actress quiet, who claimed to have an affair with Trump. According to Cohen, the plan was initiated by Trump, however, Cohen pleaded guilty to campaign finance violation.

The president’s former attorney said he received 11 checks reimbursing him for the hush money paid while Trump was president. This was part of a “criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws.”

Last week, the committee chairman, Rep. Elijah E. Cummings of Maryland, released a memo that laid out the scope of the hearing, however, absent from that memo was Russia and the election interference.

Congress determined, after discussing it with special counsel Robert S. Mueller III, that Cohen would not be allowed to publicly discuss matters related to the continuing investigation.

In his opening statement, however, Cohen stated that Trump personally monitored the negotiations to build a Trump Tower in Moscow. He asked about it “at least a half-dozen times” between January and June 2016 while he was campaigning for president.

Mr. Trump knew of and directed the Trump Moscow negotiations throughout the campaign and lied about it.

Cohen said that Trump did not instruct him to lie but made it clear through his actions that he wanted him to lie.

According to Cohen, he has his suspicions that Trump or his campaign colluded with Russia, but he has no “direct evidence.”

Several documents were provided to the committee along with the check. Cohen offered financial statements that Trump gave to institutions such as Deutsche Bank from 2011 to 2013. He said the president inflated his assets when it served his purposes and deflated his assets to reduce real estate taxes.

Additionally, he provided an article in Trump’s handwriting reporting about an auction of a portrait of himself. Cohen claimed arranged for a bidder to buy the portrait at the auction, then reimbursed the bidder from Trump’s charitable foundation. The portrait hangs in one of Trump’s country clubs.

Cohen also had letters he had written on the president’s behalf threatening his high school, colleges, and the College Board not to release his grades or SAT scores.

Committee Republicans are aggressively challenging Cohen’s testimony because he has already pleaded guilty to lying to Congress and therefore was not a credible witness. Ohio Representative Jim Jordan is the ranking Republican and he referred to Cohen as a “fraudster, cheat, convicted felon, and in two months, a federal inmate.”

Jordan believed that Cohen’s appearance was orchestrated by his attorney Lanny J. Davis, who is a longtime friend and supporter of the Clintons, as part of a broader Democratic scheme to tarnish the character of Trump. Jordan feels Cohen has motive because Trump did not bring him to Washington.
