Santa Anita racetrack reopened two days ago, after being closed for almost a month due to a large number of horses dying at the track. On March 31, 2019, the 23rd horse since Dec. 26, 2018 has died.
A 5-year-horse named Arms Runner, who was a winner of his last race on Jan. 27, 2019, fell on March 31, 2019, at the $100,000 San Simeon Stakes. The horse injured his right front leg which resulted in a two-horse spill. La Sardane, behind Arms Runner, tripped and fell, but the 5-year-old mare got back up and did not appear to be injured.
Arms Runner was seen immediately by the veterinarians at the track and was taken off the track. The equine medical director of the California Horse Racing Board, Dr. Rick Arthur confirmed the horse was euthanized.
