Jeremiah Donati, TCU athletic director, verified with the Fort Worth Star-Telegram that Dan Jenkins the Legendary golf writer for Sports Illustrated and best-selling novelist died on March 7, 2019. He was 89 years old.
Friends told the publication Jenkins’ medical condition deteriorated over the past three days before he passed away.
Jenkins began his career by writing for The Fort Worth Press and eventually made his name at Sports Illustrated. He also wrote the best-selling novels “Baja Oklahoma,” “Dead Solid Perfect,” and “Semi-Tough.
The writer was also a regular columnist for Golf Digest and Playboy.
The golf writer first major event he covered was the U.S. Open in 1951. Ben Hogan won the final round winning at Oakland Hills after he shot 67.
Becoming good friends with Hogan, he has said in interviews that match remains one of the best games he had ever seen.
Inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2012, he also was a member of the National Sportscasters and Sports Writers Hall of Fame.
Jenkins’ wife June survives him. He has two sons Marty and Danny, and a daughter Sally.
