Four-time Tony Award winner Harvey Fierstein is returning to the stage. Manhattan Theater Club announced its 2019-2020 season which included “Bella Bella,” a song written and starring Fierstein.
The solo show has Fierstein portraying Bella Abzug, the New York activist, and congresswoman.
A press release from the Manhattan Theater Club said that the show is a comedy set in 1976 on the evening before Abzug becoming the first female Senator in New York.
Kimberly Senior who is best known for “Disgraced” will direct the show. “Bella Bella” will begin previews on Oct. 1, 2019, and opening night is planned for Oct. 22. The show will be at the Off Broadway’s New York City Center – Stage I.
In an interview with Playbill, Fierstein said Abzug the Democratic party destroyed the congresswoman’s chance to run for Senate. Abzug lost by less than 1 percent the primary.
He also said that Gloria Steinem told him if Abzug did not have a Senate run she would have become the first female Speaker of the House, if not the first female President.
Fierstein said he wrote the play after he saw that the Democratic Party did the same thing to Hillary Clinton.
