Police reported a 5-year-old child suffered significant injuries on April 12, 2019, after a witness said a man either pushed or threw the child from the balcony on the third floor of Bloomington, Minnesota’s Mall of America.
Jeff Potts, Bloomington Chief of Police spoke with reporters on April 12 and informed them police were called at 10:17 a.m. CT to the Mall of America. They were told initially a child fell from the third level to the first level of the mall.
Eyewitnesses told police the 5-year-old might have been thrown or pushed at the Mall Of America. Both police officers and witnesses gave the child immediate first aid.
Potts said the 5-year-old suffered from significant injuries. The child was transported to a local hospital and had been receiving medical care.
Potts said police were told by witnesses the suspect who was seen throwing or pushing the child started running away immediately after the incident happened.
The suspect who was said to be a 24-year-old man was found by police in the Mall of America and was immediately placed into custody.
Potts said the suspect was taken to the Bloomington Police Department. Authorities do not believe there are any other threats to public safety.
“At present, we do not think there was any relationship between the suspect and the child or with any family members of the child,” Potts said. He continued by saying the incident was isolated.”
The area in the mall where the fall took place has been closed, as the police continue to investigate.
