
Barry Malkin, the Oscar-nominated movie editor who worked on 11 movies with Francis Ford Coppola including the Godfather Trilogy, died at the age of 80 on April 4, 2019, in Manhattan.
Malkin was nominated twice for an Oscar for his work on “The Godfather: Part II” and “The Godfather: Part III.”
Malkin also worked with Andre Berman on four movies: “Isn’t She Great” released in 2000; “It Could Happen to You” in 1994; “Honeymoon in Vegas” in 1992; and “The Freshman” in 1990 which starred Marlon Brando.
The Oscar nominee began his career editing in 1969 “The Rain People” for Coppola.
He went on to work with Coppola on “The Rainmaker” in 1997; “Jack” in 1996; “The Godfather: Part III” in 1990; “New York Stories” in 1989; “Gardens of Stone” in 1987; “The Cotton Club” in 1984; “Peggy Sue Got Married” in 1986; “Rumble Fish” in 1983; “Apocalypse Now” in 1979; and “The Godfather: Part II” in 1974;
Malkin started in the business working for Dede Allen and worked on the film “America America.”
He met Coppola through Allen and was given his first major job editing in 1969 the movie “The Rain People.”
Malkin’s wife Stephanie survives him and his daughter. A memorial service is being planned for a later date.
