Notre Dame

On April 15, the Cathedral of Notre Dame, one of the most famous buildings in France caught fire. Notre Dame is one of the most memorable catholic churches, which is why the fire sparked massive media coverage around the world.

There were many architects that started building the Cathedral in 1163 but did not finish until 1345. Events like Henry VI of England becoming the king of France in 1431 happened in Notre Dame.

Before the fire occurred, it was clear that the building was in need of serious repair. Lots of people continued to look over the massive need for improvement on the Cathedral. Because the building was so old, weather and time became an issue for the building, which did help when it came to dealing with the fire.

NPR’s Eleanor Beardsley was at the scene of this catastrophe, and shared her thoughts and what she witnessed from those around her. According to Beardsley, ” People are not screaming, they’re just watching it burn and people are in a state of shock”.

This building is a very significant part of European history, which is why many people were so shocked that Notre Dame was actually on fire. There are many individuals reaching out to lend a helping hand by donating what they can to help restore this building. For example, some of France’s wealthiest families are in partnership to start a fundraising campaign so that it is possible to reconstruct the Cathedral.
