Former Actor Ben Unwin ‘Home and Away’ Dies at 41


Actor Ben Unwin made a name for himself playing Jesse McGregor in the Australian television soap opera, “Home and Away.” He has died at the age of 41.

On August 14, 2019, New South Wales police found Unwin dead. It was the day before his birthday.

“Yesterday at midday police attended Minyon Falls. Whian Whian, responding to a concern for welfare. The body of a 41-year-old man was located. The death has not been treated as suspicious,” according to a statement from the police.

Unwin was on “Home and Away” from 1996-2000 and 2002-2005. His character, Jesse, had a major role in the long-running soap opera. He was seen as somewhat of a bad boy who was often in trouble with the law.

After leaving the show, and acting, he studied law and later worked as a solicitor.

The Seven Network, which broadcasts “Home and Away” released a statement:

“Cast and crew from Home and Away are saddened to learn of the passing of former castmate, Ben Unwin. Ben’s work in the role of Jesse McGregor is remembered with much affection.”

Following the news of his death, castmates paid tribute to the actor. Kimberley Cooper, who played Gipsy Smith on the show, posted a photograph of her with Unwin on the cover of TV Week. The caption read, “You forever hold a special place in my heart.”

Lynne McGranger, who plays Irene Roberts on “Home and Away” said that she was shocked by Unwin’s death.

Ada Nicodemou, who plays Leah Patterson, was romantically involved with Jesse McGregor in the soap opera. She stated, “Just woke up to the tragic news of Ben’s passing, my heart goes out to his family.”

There has been no word on Unwin’s cause of death.
