Jennifer Lopez Being Sued Over Copyright Infringement

Jennifer Lopez seems to be in a bit of hot water over a photograph of herself and Alex Rodriguez that she posted to her Instagram Story back in 2017. In the photograph used, Lopez and Rodriguez can be seen walking down the street as they hold hands. While the image may have featured the artist, it turns out that she did not have permission to use the picture.

According to E! News, court documents that were recently filed against Lopez state that the owner of the image in question is Splash News and Picture Agency. They claim that there was never a license between the company and the artist for use of the image, and instead, “Lopez used it without authorization or permission from plaintiff to do so.”

In the lawsuit, it is revealed that the artist and her representatives were notified of the copyright infringement via a letter dated on Dec. 12, 2017. The plaintiff in this case feels that because of the nature of Jennifer Lopez’s celebrity and how well known she and Alex Rodriguez are, there is a lot of value to the image in question.

As part of their arguments about potential copyright infringement, the plaintiff is arguing that, “Because of the subject’s celebrity status, and the Photograph’s quality and visual appeal, plaintiff (and the photographer it represents) stood to gain revenue from licensing the Photograph.”

Considering the image was in fact posted to Lopez’s Instagram story, and she has millions of followers, the company feels that they are entitled to both an injunction against her ever being able to use the image again, as well as damages of $150,000.

This is not the first time a celebrity has been sued for copyright infringement after posting a picture to social media. Gigi Hadid faced the same type of lawsuit over an image of her ex-boyfriend that she shared to her Instagram account. Plus, the Kardashians have spoken about this same issue on social media as well.

While Jennifer Lopez and her team have not yet addressed this lawsuit, it will be interesting to see what happens next.
