On the morning of Friday, March 6, 2026, President Dolad Trump told CNN’s Dana Bash in a phone interview that Cuba “is going to fall pretty soon.”
“Cuba is gonna fall pretty soon, by the way, unrelated, but Cuba is gonna fall too. They want to make a deal so badly. They want to make a deal, and so I’m going to put Marco (Rubio) over there, and we’ll see how that works out. We’re really focused on this one right now. We’ve got plenty of time, but Cuba’s ready – after 50 years,” Trump stated while explaining that Iran is the priority.
Concerning the island nation, he added: “I’ve been watching it for 50 years, and it’s fallen right into my lap because of me, it’s fallen, but it’s nevertheless fallen right into the lap. And we’re doing very well.”
On Thursday, Trump stated it was only “a question of time” before American Cubans could return to their home country, as if it were the next item on the administration’s agenda.
Referring to the Secretary of State, Trump stated: “He’s doing some job, and your next one is going to be, we want to do that special Cuba. He’s waiting. But he says, ‘Let’s get this one finished first.’ We could do them all at the same time, but bad things happen. If you watch countries over the years, you do them all too fast, bad things happen. We’re not going to let anything bad happen to this country.”
Cuba in Crisis
After the U.S. military captured Nicolas Maduro in Venezuela on Jan.3, 2026, Trump stopped the flow of oil to the island nation, and 10 million people were plunged into darkness.
It appeared the island nation would be the next target for regime change, and the dream of Cuban exiles would finally be realized. However, it seems Trump and Rubio are making moves designed to cause the island nation to be dependent on the U.S. economy, which, according to USA Today, is a “striking about-face from decades of U.S policy toward the island nation.”
On Feb. 25, the Trump administration opened the door to U.S. petroleum products, such as diesel, being sold directly to the private sector in the island nation, circumventing the 1960 U.S. embargo.
Trump, however, has not hesitated to use military force in Venezuela and Iran; he seems to be taking a slow and steady economic strike on the island nation – a Caribbean-style perestroika, or gradual granting of market-like reforms that led to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
Friendly Takeover?
Ric Herro, executive director of the Cuba Study Group, says: “You have the Trump administration recognizing the Cuban private sector as both a real sector and also a key strategic partner on the ground to help relieve the humanitarian crisis. We’ve never seen that before.”
On Feb. 27, Trump confirmed Rubio was talking with officials in the island nation “at a very high level” and warned that the island nation is a weakened state. “Maybe we’ll have a friendly takeover of Cuba.”
Trump and Rubio will hold discussions with like-minded Latin American leaders from Argentina and El Salvador on March 7 for a summit at the president’s Doral golf club.
