Iran has increased the attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz, according to Eurasia Group.

U.S. Central Command warned “the Iranian regime is using civilian ports along the Strait of Hormuz to conduct military operations that threaten international shipping” and put lives at risk.

On Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at least five cargo ships were hit by Iran in the passageway, according to officials. At least four seafarers were killed after missiles struck a UAE-flagged tuboat that was attempting to assist a stranded container ship north of Oman in the Strait last week, according to officials.

Traffic in the Strait of Hormuz has been halted by threats from Iran. On Tuesday, the U.S. military destroyed 16 Iranian minelaying naval vessels in the area. Maritime expert Capt. Kees Buckens told Axios it is easy for IRGC to send out speedboats loaded with bombs and missiles to attack ships.
