“Mermaids: The Body Found” increases speculation on existence of mermaids

By Amanda Shore

Paul Robertson, a former employee of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), speaks in a two-hour Animal Planet special about his experiences with his research team while they were investigating mass whale beachings around the world. This television program, “Mermaids: The Body Found,” took about five years to complete and gives compelling evidence that suggests that mermaids could be real.

In this program, a sound clip that has been called “the bloop” is played as the first piece of evidence that there is an unknown or new species in the water. Robertson and his team were investigating the mass whale beachings in 2007. When they examined the tissue samples that they took from the whales, they discovered evidence of a SONAR weapon. They believed that this weapon caused the whales to become disoriented. The whales tried to escape the blasts of sound and ended up in waters that were too shallow to support their massive sizes, so they ended up beached.

To try and prove this theory, they pulled up one of their buoys that was recording SONAR activity. It was in this recording that the bloop was discovered. They recognized the sound of another animal mixed in with the sounds of the whales and dolphins. After more closely inspecting it, they discovered that the unknown creature was communicating with them, possibly warning each other to get away.

Later on, there was another mass beaching in South Africa. The researchers in South Africa had recorded similar sounds on their own devices. Robertson and his team traveled there to investigate. There, they were shown the remains of an unknown creature that had been found inside a great white shark. After carefully studying this creature’s remains, these scientists became convinced that it was a mermaid.

Unfortunately, the government confiscated the remains and their research as the team was about to return to the United States. The only thing that they had left was the bloop. Robertson tracked down one of two boys that had reportedly seen a mermaid body on the beach the morning of the first mass whale beaching. He says that he captured the mermaid on his camera phone. Robertson viewed this video as well as a drawing that the boy did after the event. The drawing matched what his team had found.

In addition to all of the scientific evidence that they found, they also looked to history for some evidence. There have been reports of strange spears and daggers found in sea creatures that fishermen have been finding for years. Robertson had found one of these tools in the great white shark. 16th-century drawings show very close matches to what Robertson and his team found. Ancient cave paintings show struggles between humans and mermaids.

Robertson stated in the program that he believes that mermaids do exist but that, unlike one of his colleagues who thinks that the only solution is to find them, he doesn’t want to find the mermaids anymore. He stated that he thinks the mermaids have survived this long because they know how to hide. He talked about how he doesn’t think that humans would be able to coexist with the mermaids without wiping them out. He is still trying to get the testing and development of the SONAR weapon to stop in order to save whales, dolphins and mermaids.

Whether they are mermaids or not, there are definitely mysterious and unknown species in the oceans. Watch “Mermaids: The Body Found” to decide for yourself.

I’ve always felt that there has to be another type of Humanoid Creature relating to the waters. Because when we look at Natural Child Birth it’s way to amazing how a newborn baby knows just what to do under those conditions. I say conditions being that the human body temperature is around 98.6 degrees however once the birth is over the newborn baby is now in a new environment and a way much colder temperature of liquid fluid that is unknown to it And yet there is no indication that there was any struggle to adapt to a much cooler temperature. For this to happen for a baby then how much easier would it be possible for a grown man or woman to take to the sea and adapt to live in deep sea and over time metamorphosis take place & man as we know it changes just a little in certain areas so that he can compete in this new area or environment of life like the webbing between our fingers grow just a little bit more so that we can swim with greater ease. Every other creature on this planet has taken to the ocean over time and over came with metamorphic changes, snakes have done it birds are doing it everyday right before our very eyes. So thinking about this who could better adapt then man !!!

If the governments confiscated their research, it’s VERY obvious Mermaids DO Exist! ALL governments lie to it’s people… WE are NOT “alone” in the Universe or under the seas!

  3. Hello, I must be going January 2, 2014 at 8:46 pm

Real science is so fascinating and mystifying.
I’m offended that a once respectable channel would resort to this level of tripe.
What also really offensive is the number of people here who actually believe this crap!

too many legends about their existence to ignore. I like the Dogan tribe legend that these creatures came from the Sirius star long ago, no Darwin theory. Why has the Sirius star been removed from Google sky. The crop circle that appeared in Salinas , Ca. DEC 30, 2013 had braille codes within them. 192 was the message. Iridium is 192 on the periodic table of elements . Iridium intake will make ones phychic powers very strong. See things for yourself and believe what you see. Don’t take any bodies word for truth, especially the government

If this is a hoax, which it appears to be, why did the University of Cape Town and the University of the Witwatersrand allow their names to be used ? They should sue for defamation and bringing their names into disrepute!! I did wonder why the UCT guy was dressed as if he was living in the 1970′s!

  6. olympia cooper July 19, 2013 at 3:27 pm

i should imagine that if they ever did find them and nessie they would kill them disect them and then burn the evidence.

  7. olympia cooper July 19, 2013 at 3:23 pm

love the thought. they are for real. why does the government think we dont have a right to know !

You all are so quick to jump on the band wagon, always disbelieving that maybe something like mermaids could exist,or anything else……YOU don’t know whats out there………stop and think, there are others beside ourselves……………

    What is a “bloop”?

  15. Chris Wilson June 24, 2013 at 3:34 pm

I guess when you publish online and borrow the name of a venerable newspaper people don’t immediately realize you are the equivalent of those black and white newspapers they sell in the grocery stores that publish pictures of sasquatches and ufos

  16. Mark June 23, 2013 at 3:14 pm

If any of you guys would have googled the background of the show it wouldd say Charley Foley founder of animal planet gave orders to research mermaids for a show. It also says that all the perdons doing the interviews were actors. There is no proof that mermaids excist!

    • ginny July 7, 2013 at 2:06 pm

Well while there might not be absolute proof they exist, there also is no absolute truth that they don’t. Giant squids ‘Don’t exist’ either or they didn’t 100 yrs. ago.

  17. Vince June 20, 2013 at 11:16 am

Additionally, the show postulated that the mermaids are mammal and need air to breathe, even while remaining virtually undetected thus long because “do you know how deep the Marianas Trench is?” Uh huh … and how much air is down there? lol

  18. Amber June 19, 2013 at 5:47 pm

You guys do know the actors are for the reenactments, right?

  19. polarbear June 16, 2013 at 7:32 pm

what ever is people talk about this creature this is not something new in this century, people talking about this creature long time ago.. if this smting like only one two person seeing this creature no body beleive it. so its posibility that long time ago this creature appear any many people saw it.

  20. Eduajrdo Gustav June 7, 2013 at 2:51 pm

There is a legal disclaimer that appears in the credits (near the end) that says something like “this is based on the possibility that mermaids may actually exist.” That is not exact, but it is written in a way that makes it clear it is not based on fact. Plus there is an ImDb page that shows the actors real names…

  21. Valentin June 6, 2013 at 11:44 pm

If I’m not mistaken the videos that were played on the show were claimed to be “actual footage”, from that kid’s cellphone, a fishing boat etc. You don’t even have to replay the videos, because they are obviously fake. I watched this show laughing, I’d rather bet on Bobo finding bigfoot than these guys haha.

  22. R. S. Pony June 6, 2013 at 3:45 pm

I found my rainbow sparkle pony eating a mermaid body!

  23. Lorne Johnson June 2, 2013 at 9:47 pm

Thats funny. With the technology that we have. How is there anything that has not been discovered. I mean really, people are still looking for bigfoot. With the success of some television shows, i believe crirical thinking is a lost art in our society. Keep looking, you will find something that you will wish you never found.

  24. Richard Kimmel June 2, 2013 at 9:49 am

Well, the show is obviously a fake. It’s all actors and disclaimers. The only thing that is real, as I recall, is the sound on the tape, and a “sound” is not the same thing as a mermaid now, is it? It has been several months since I saw the show and if you are maybe 9 years old it can be convincing. But if you have any capacity for critical thinking the whole thing falls apart. Oh, I’ve got to go- a flying saucer just landed in my back yard. Somebody call NASA.

  25. KS2 Problema June 1, 2013 at 9:13 am

Clarification: when I wrote, “(Oh, and, whether true or not, I’m ALL for that sleazy and disreputable operation to be investigated from to p to bottom,” I inadvertently left out the information that I was referring to a reported fraud investigation of the people behind this ‘docufiction’ and the website that had been at mermaidsarereal.com.

  26. KS2 Problema June 1, 2013 at 9:06 am

I think the Discovery channel should try their hand with an actual documentary for a change: how some people are as dumb as a bag of rocks.

The people who put this thing out called it ‘docu-fiction’ — that means it’s a STORY that they MADE UP about something they think will drag a couple eyeballs to the thoroughly sleazy Discovery Channel. (Oh, and, whether true or not, I’m ALL for that sleazy and disreputable operation to be investigated from to p to bottom.)

the show is entirely fake…dr paul robertson isnt even real. look him up.

  30. mike May 29, 2013 at 2:55 pm

The problem i have with this is that everyone asks for proof and when a video pops up every says its fake so no matter what nothing is legitimate enough for people.

  31. Posiden VII May 28, 2013 at 3:01 pm

    I have seen a few first hand…
The people of the world should know the truth…they are far more advanced than we think and have 2/3 of the world to survive in…
The gov. just doesn’t want us to know what is really going on and how much harm we as humans on the surface have caused to the ocean.
These “aquatic apes” are a part of the our world and our DNA.
Thank you Paul Robertson and colleagues of his for not just researching, but for proving that they are among us.
Maybe someday, the gov. of the world will actually work together and make the world a better place, rather than just finding a way to make the most money for themselves!

  32. Judy May 28, 2013 at 10:35 am

I believe we are not the only ones that exists in this world. Why wouldn’t there be aquatic humanoids. I think what we need to look at is why does our government agencies continue to lie and keep secrets of things that are of importance to all human beings. Our government has gotten way out of control. They are not my decision maker! They are probably pissed because this new species can’t pay taxes. LMAO… NOAA? what investigation have they done! Their credibility is no good, just like our government agencies!

    • 79mermaidfan May 28, 2013 at 10:51 am

I totally agree on the subject of Why is the Government holding back????? Why is it sooooo important to keep secrets about other species out and about??? What’s the big deal? The truth is that we do know and chose to close our eyes and ears— guess these other species ain’t of importance to the world yet??? A world without lies and secrets is better for me… Just let it be already cheeeeezzzzz

  33. Sam May 27, 2013 at 9:54 pm

Look up this topic and the scientists on NPR’s website before you discredit it. A lot of website have been seized on this debate by the US government.

  34. Roslynd May 27, 2013 at 9:50 pm

I’d like to believe there are mermaids out there. I think there might be, or might have been. It’s entirely plausible. However, I question whether this film helps or hinders mermaid authenticity. They bring up good points, but this is not real. I’d like to see real evidence, not just speculation and movie magic.

  35. Joe Castaneda May 27, 2013 at 6:51 am

Wow, just saw the show last night, some of the videos like the struggling fish with the spear in it looked like a video game shot, just unnatural movement! But the video that looked real was shot from the British Coast Guard with the two guys in the boat practicing water rescue with dummies, that one makes me think! there very well could be something out there. I guess the world is mostly water and it is possible some new life form could be living in hiding away from people.

  36. JTO May 27, 2013 at 5:32 am

Ah, yes, another species for man to obliterate.
I bet they taste like chicken…

  37. Ebonei May 26, 2013 at 9:09 pm

if they do exist they want their life to stay secret like it been, lived thru pilgrims Indians cave men slaver. they have the true life, no bills no worries etc.

  40. Seriously? February 28, 2013 at 12:53 pm

Gee, the first time this aired on television, I was like, oh cool. Mermaids are real. Then I freaked out at the cell phone footage. Probably fake though.

  41. Melissa December 28, 2012 at 8:45 pm

You honestly believe we can simply write it off because an “offical” says it isn’t true? The NOAA can’t be blindly trusted anymore than the government. I’m not a conspiracy nut, or even a die hard mermaid believer, but I also see no issue with posing the question, “What if?” or “Could there be..?” There are signs of other life forms, and I don’t believe the the intention was to “fool people”. I’ll gladly take on the name of fool, if that is what being open minded means.

    • Sal Manella BF3 December 29, 2012 at 4:13 pm

If there are MerPeople I would Say it is some horrible Army or CIA expirament into Genetic Engineering, They are the kind of people who want to create a disembodied brain to put into the drivers seat of a YF22. Sirt of like in the movie “Donovans Brain”. Mer people might make better Navy SEALS than any land creature. They would be like porposes which are the only mamillian creature I know capable of killing a great white shark.

  42. Sigh December 2, 2012 at 3:26 am

As people have already pointed out, it is a ‘fake’ documentary. The presentation of this article is grossly misleading since it fails to make it clear that the claims are fictional.

“No evidence of aquatic humanoids has ever been found.”

I saw the show Mermaids The Body Found I’m almost nine but i belived in mermaids so this was so wierd for me. The first mermaid I saw was Ariel the Disney mermaid so when I watched this i thought they would be more prettier so when i saw that they were blue i was FREAKED OUT and the video when the kids poked the mermaid with a stick it scared me so BAD but when ever the video showed up my sister would turn it down and watch it but i would cover up under my cover on the couch ’cause it has a big T.V

  44. Mark November 23, 2012 at 2:36 am

They had me going, until I looked up the show and discovered Animal Planet refers to it as a “docu-fiction”. The evidence shown was entirely fiction.

But what I find fascinating is that the ideas presented aren’t entirely unplausible. It IS widely believed that Humans began to walk erect when they learned to find food in water. It isn’t all that far-fetched that some were compelled to focus their entire diet on seafood and evolved into aquatic mammals. It wouldn’t be the first time our ancestry branched. Neanderthals are a branch separate from our own which became extinct. Perhaps others successfully branched off and were able to thrive and survive by evading and avoiding contact with us. I’m convinced through personal experience that sasquatch are real. Considering we know more about deep space than we know of our own oceans’ depths, an aquatic primate/humanoid actually seems even more likely.

    • Sal_Manella BF3 December 1, 2012 at 9:09 pm

People are born with a blank slate of a mind. It is possible such a show might make believers out of some in what it is trying to say. What did Ben Franklin once say or write ?
You can fool most of the people some of the time, even if some
of the time is 2012 years ? If the maker of this film can fool only one million people out of 7 billion, just imagine the money he or she might make ? :-O

    • Marshall Rawlings May 28, 2013 at 12:55 am

So your saying its fake even with all that footage or your just trying to keep crap underwraps you hypocritical government enforcing murderer

  45. laur November 22, 2012 at 8:36 pm

I belive to. well since the government has them captured why don’t they do something productive like to teach them English. then we can make friends with them. and find out all the other things that are in the ocean that we don’t know about. if they look like humans they probably are smart like we are. if we educate them. they can educate us.

  46. kayla October 28, 2012 at 2:39 am

I believe u so much I know I’m only 14 but after watching the show just a few min. ago wow it seems so real now that I see that image I don’t know y but I cry lol its weird but I don’t care its a very interesting thing to say about mermaids but like I said I believe totally :)

  47. Reagan Salstrom October 13, 2012 at 8:02 pm

I, 4 1, totally believe u. I agree w/ Debbie, “just because u haven’t cn them doesn’t mean they aren’t real” and it defiantly doesn’t mean u have to drop a pile of, well, stuff on people just because they’re not afraid to believe! And, there is proof they exist. Up there. There is no CGI in that video. And in the actual episode on TV, they show the dimamics of the skull, and how the sound waves travel through water. Beat that!

  48. Debbie October 5, 2012 at 4:27 am

actually there is mermaids just because u haven’t seen them doesn’t mean they do not exist, what are we afriad of ? thats why so much is kept secret, its for our own good at staying dumb

    • Reagan Salstrom October 13, 2012 at 8:04 pm

I believe them, and, it’s true. They keep stuff from us to protect ourselves.

Deadly sonar technology that has killed many water animals is real. Use Google Patents and you will find a few.
