American singer-songwriter Ray J has been arrested after an altercation involving him allegedly spitting on a police officer at an upscale hotel. The arrest came after a confrontation with police became ugly.
Sources say the Beverly Hills Police Department received a concerned call from someone inside the Beverly Wilshire Hotel, claiming that Ray J was causing a disturbance at the bar (there are also recent reports that the singer had touched a female patron in an inappropriate manner). The singer had allegedly refused to leave when asked by hotel staff. Once the police arrived, they began questioning both Ray J and an unidentified female companion. According to accounts, the singer did not go quietly, putting up resistance to the officers. It is reported that once Ray J was seated in the back of the police vehicle, he made the decision to kick out one of the car windows. The alleged spitting occurred sometime during the arrest. The charges for which the singer is being booked include trespassing, vandalism, resisting arrest, and battery. The battery charge is associated with the spitting accusation.
The hotel in question is one known for its extremely high standing and reputation, and is considered one of Los Angeles’ most renowned. It is best known as the setting for the 1990 award-winning film Pretty Women, starring Golden Globe veteran Julia Roberts.
Ray J, real name William Ray Norwood Jr., comes from a family with a notorious reputation in the music community. His sister, Brandy Norwood, is a multi-platinum selling artist, most famous for her hit track The Boy Is Mine featuring Monica Brown (known simply as Monica). Rap superstar turned reggae enthusiast Snoop Lion (former known as Snoop Dogg), is Ray J’s first cousin. Ray J first made a name for himself in 1995, when he debuted his first album entitled Everything You Want. Unfortunately, the only hit the singer produced from this album was the track Let It Go, which appeared on the soundtrack for the movie Set It Off. The track hit its peak at No. 25 in the United States. He was dropped from Elektra Records two years later. The singer continued, however, to record and produce over the years, resulting in a hit song with with sister Brandy and the culmination of a fourth studio album. He is currently working on his fifth, said to be entitled Raydiation 2.
Ray J is undeniably best known for his association with newly-married “superstar” Kim Kardashian. The two were in a relationship from 2003-2006. In the first year of their relationship, the two were involved in creating a self-filmed pornographic tape, now famously entitled Kim K Superstar. The tape was released in 2007 after the pair’s breakup, resulting in Kardashian suing Vivid Entertainment honcho Steve Hirsch for ownership of the film. The same year, however, Kardashian made the decision to drop the suit and settle with Hirsch to the tune of five million dollars. The tape is alleged to be one of the most purchased adult movies of all time. Ray J recently released a song that referenced the film, in a move that many perceive to be a cheap shot at Kardashian’s new husband Kanye West, entitled I Hit It First.
The circumstances surrounding Ray J’s arrest and the allegations of spitting on a police officer are still murky. The charges make it clear, however, that the singer is certainly in a reasonable amount of trouble.
