United Launch Alliance (ULA) successfully launched a new GPS satellite into orbit using an Atlas V in Cape Canaveral, Fla. This is the 50th flight for the rocket and the satellite will be used by the U.S. Air Force.
The rocket was created by Lockheed Martin, was introduced in 2002, and based somewhat on the Atlas-Centaur rocket series. The Atlas V rocket fires in two stages.
ULA is a partnership between Boeing and Lockheed Martin. The rocket was designed to adapt to all payload requirements of the U.S. Air Force. This particular launch was in a Light configuration.
