Frances Cobain, daughter of late rock legend Kurt, has seemingly buried the long-time hatchet with mother Courtney Love. The pair was recently seen at a public event together, for the first time in over five years.
The infamous mother-and-daughter were photographed this past Saturday in attendance at the premiere of the recently released HBO documentary Kurt Cobain: Montage of Heck, which was shown at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. Their union appeared to have been restored after the many years of fighting and separation, with the two publicly sharing a close embrace with each other as though there had never been any bad blood between them at all. Again, this is the first time that they have been spotted out in public together for over five years due to the strife of their aforementioned feud, which drove an extremely substantial wedge between them to say the very least.
The now 22-year-old Cobain was taken out of Love’s custody back when she was 17, after several years of legal turmoil regarding what authorities referred to as “unstable conduct” on the mother’s part in reference to the environment in which her daughter was being raised. Near the end of December 2009, two new legal guardians were appointed for Cobain as a result of the aforementioned conduct; her paternal grandmother (Wendy O’Connor) and paternal aunt (Kimberley Dawn). The documents surrounding the details of the case, which were obtained by TMZ shortly after the ruling, gave the reason for said seized guardianship as being in the best interest of the girl in terms of both her personal and financial well-being.
Although the visual artist was released from the above mentioned guardians’ care approximately eight months later, on her 18th birthday to be exact, her relationship with Love most certainly did not get rectified. On the contrary, the pair began to engage in extremely heavy social media battles on a regular basis, one of these altercations going so far as for Cobain to recommend to Twitter honchos that her mother be banned from the website altogether for the behavior she chose to exhibit on it.
This request for membership ban arose from a heated argument the pair had engaged in over the alleged inappropriate actions of former Nirvana member Dave Grohl, whom Love accused of having began an inappropriate interaction with her then 21-year-old daughter. The former Hole frontwoman accused the drummer of having hit on Cobain, something which both the Foo Fighters frontman and Love’s daughter have adamantly denied since. The girl called her mother a delusional liar, while Grohl labelled her behavior as yet another one of her irrational Twitter rants, which he said were out of control and entirely inappropriate all around. Love was not, as per her daughter’s request, banned from the site in the end.
It remains to be seen how long the truce between Frances Bean Cobain and estranged mother Courtney Love will last. For now, however, the pair seem to be doing their best to break bread and mend their broken union as best they can following everything that has happened over the years.
