On Sunday, May 27, boxing fans learned that five-time boxing champion Johnny Tapia was found dead at his Albuquerque home. Tapia was 45, and his career was marked by excessive use of both alcohol and cocaine. In fact, in the early ‘90s, Tapia was banned from boxing for three and a half years. He finished his career with a 59-5-2 record.
Following Sunday’s shocking news about Tapia, we learn today that Paul ‘The Punisher’ Williams was paralyzed after being involved in a motorcycle accident in Atlanta, GA. The local news channel 12 reports that the boxer is most likely paralyzed from the waist down and is scheduled for surgery this Wednesday.
Williams is scheduled to box Mexican Saul Alvarez on Sept. 15, 2012, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas for the WBC Light Middleweight title.
The news is surely a blow to promoters, who are likely to have to canceled the planned fight short of a miracle.
