After distress over I’ll Have Another’s injury and inability to run in the Belmont Stakes for a chance at the Triple Crown, the mile and a half horse race ended in a photo finish. Bodemeister, who was beaten by I’ll Have Another in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes, lost yet again.
Paynter was leading the race, but at the last second, Union Rags took the lead and the victory. The victor finished seventh in the Kentucky Derby, but with I’ll Have Another gone and a new jockey at the reins, he raced to victory in the Belmont Stakes.
