Hempstead, New York – Tragedy strikes a Long Island neighborhood, when a Nassau Inter-County Express bus crashed into a 5-year-old boy pinning him against the and the interior portion of a house on East Fulton Avenue, police said.
Lt. Frank McNamee of the Hempstead Village police said, “The bus was trying to avoid the pedestrian in the roadway and wound up hitting the child anyway.
The accident occurred at approximately 9:45 p.m. local time.
The child who has not been identified was inside the house in a front room and became pinned under the bus when it crashed. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
Other passengers were injured in the crash. At least nine people have been transported to local hospitals, according to the Hempstead Fire Department.
It is unknown how many were from the house and how many from the bus.
Police did not clarified the condition of those that were injured.
Officials report at least 15 passengers were on the bus when the accident occurred.
A spokesperson for Nassau Inter County Express said the company “is cooperating with police officials, and has its own team investigating the incident.”
According to a Nassau Inter County Express official, 6 passengers refused medical attention.
The bus was a Route N70 bus travelling westbound on Fulton Avenue.
