The 57-year-old Kozel was outside his Independent Muffler Shop, located at 5654 S. Western Ave. when he was hit by gun fire in his back at 5:25 p.m., authorities said.
The victim was rushed to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, where he died at 9:09 p.m., according to police and the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office.
Kozel’s death is Chicago’s fifth homicide since the beginning of the new year.
Police have made no arrests as of early Thursday morning.
According to reports out of Chicago this morning, area Central detectives are presently investigating the shooting.
