In Los Angeles the rapper 50 Cent has been charged with assaulting his ex-girlfriend and mother of his child, as well as trashing her Los Angeles condominium last month.
City Attorney Mike Feuer said on Wednesday that the 37-year-old rapper has been charged with domestic violence and vandalism.
Police reports say that the rapper, whose real name is Curtis Jackson, fled the scene of the crime when they arrived on June 23 at a condo belonging to a woman that he fathered a child with.
Police say they found the bedroom door kicked in, and damage totaling $7,100 at his ex-girlfriend’s house at Toluca Lake. Law enforcement officials arrived shortly after the incident. The mother of his child told police that after she hid in her bedroom that the rapper kicked down her bedroom door and kicked her as well.
She also claimed that 50 cent went on a destructive rampage through her house and destroyed chandeliers, furniture; a TV; a lamp, and even rummaged through her bedroom closet.
Police have revealed that the woman had been in a three-year relationship with the 37 year-old rapper.
He’s due to be arraigned on July 22 in the Van Nuys Superior Court and could face up to five years in jail and $46,000 in fines if he is convicted on all five counts. After 50 Cent getting charged with assault, it doesn’t sound like the city attorney will be cutting him any breaks.
City Attorney Mike Feuer said in a statement that, “Regardless of perceived celebrity or notoriety, domestic violence is a serious crime and alleged perpetrators will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law by this office.” Feuer also said in his statement that, “We will continue to look out for the safety of all victims of domestic violence and seek justice for the alleged crimes.”
The City Attorney’s Office confirmed that the assaulted woman, whose identity is not being released because this is a domestic-violence case, was previously in a three-year relationship with 50 Cent and they have a child together.
This isn’t the first time that the rapper has had a run in with the police. On June 1994 the rapper was arrested for helping to sell four vials of cocaine to an undercover police officer. 50 Cent was arrested again three weeks later when police searched his home and found heroin, ten ounces of crack cocaine, and a starter gun. He was sentenced to three to nine years in prison, but served six months in a shock incarceration boot camp where he earned his GED. He has said that he did not use cocaine himself, he only sold it.
50 Cent was arrested again on January 1, 2003 with four other members of his entourage. Police reportedly found two guns inside a parked car outside a Manhattan nightclub. The rapper, who was 27 years-old at the time, was arrested shortly before 2am and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon.
50 Cent was then sentenced to two years probation on July 22, 2005 from an incident in May 2004 when 50 Cent jumped into the audience after being hit with a water bottle. He was charged, at that time, with three counts of assault and battery.
After a September 8, 2006 arrest for driving an unregistered vehicle, driving without insurance, driving with an expired permit and making an unsafe lane change, the rapper has managed to stay, pretty much, out of trouble.
The rapper’s representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Now that 50 Cent has been charged with assault, it could mean some serious jail time for the rapper.
