We think the time has come for you all to tell the world who your favourite ‘Walking Dead’ character is. We know that a lot folks out there, the female type, really have a “thing” for actor Norman Reedus who plays Daryl Dixon which means, obviously, Daryl Dixon is a huge fan favourite!
But let’s look at the other ‘main’ characters and see if anyone else falls into the category of fan-fave and why.
Rick Grimes: He’s the lead protagonist, we follow him as he searches for his family and other survivors and his struggles with the different factions that he comes in contact with. Often described as an “everyman” type character, Grimes is in both the comic book series The Walking Dead and the television show. He’s played by Andrew Lincoln in the television series of the same name. Grimes is a small town sheriff’s deputy who awakens from a coma to find the world overrun with zombies.
Daryl Dixon: Daryl is played by Norman Reedus. He is an original character and has no comic counterpart. He has become immensely popular since his first appearance and he’s emerged as a major fan-favorite. Daryl is a Southern hunter and expert tracker who constantly lives in the shadow of his brother, Merle. Like his brother, he is initially shown as volatile, short-tempered, and of questionable repute, but is tolerated by the group due to his survival skills.
Merle Dixon: Merle is another who has not comic counterpart. He’s played by Michael Rooker. He is also a main character in the 2013 video game The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct, which focuses on him and his brother, Daryl Dixon, during the early days of the zombie apocalypse. Merle is the older brother of Daryl Dixon. Due to their lack of a mother and their neglectful and abusive father, Merle raised Daryl, though there were periods when Merle was not around due to his being in juvenile hall.
Andrea: Andrea is another character from both the comic and the television series and she’s played by Laurie Holden. In both verses, Andrea develops from an insecure and inexperienced young woman into a hardened warrior. Since the comic was launched, she has remained one of the longest-living survivors, alongside Rick, Carl, Maggie and Sophia.
Lori Grimes: Lori Grimes is another character who is from the comic book series and the television series. She is played by Sarah Wayne Callies. As the outbreak begins, she and her son, Carl, are evacuated out of the city with help from her husband Rick’s best friend and his working partner, Shane Walsh, in hopes of getting to where her parents live. During the evacuation, the guilt that she has been wracked with over abandoning Rick leads her to have a one-night stand with Shane, which she deeply regrets afterward.
Shane Walsh: Shane exists in both verses and he is portrayed as a Cynthiana Sheriff’s Deputy, as well as the longtime friend and fellow police officer Rick Grimes. After Rick is shot goes into a coma, he rescues Rick’s family from the zombie apocalypse and leads a group of survivors. He becomes romantically involved with Rick’s wife, Lori. When Rick returns to his family alive, Shane grows increasingly jealous of their relationship, as well as Rick’s role in the group.
Maggie Green: Maggie exists in both the comic and the telly series. She is played by Lauren Cohan. She is Hershel Greene’s eldest daughter and Glenn’s lover. In the comics, she eventually becomes Glenn’s wife and later widow, and takes the role of being a surrogate mother to Sophia Peletier following the suicide of the girl’s biological mother.
Hershel Green: Hershel also exists in both worlds and he is played by Scott Wilson. He is the widowed owner of a farm in Georgia and has previous experience in the veterinary fields.
Phillip Blake/The Governor: Blake/The Governor exists in both worlds and is played by David Morrissey. The Governor first appears in the third episode of season three, having kidnapped Andrea and Michonne from the woods after discovering them near a downed military helicopter. He murders the one surviving soldier, Lt. Welles, after Welles tells him where the rest of his squad is. He embarks on a sexual affair with Andrea.
So there you have it, our selection of favourites in the first three seasons of The Walking Dead and a quick summation of who they are. We may have missed a couple, but you’ll let us know, we’re sure! So have a vote on who the most popular “The Walking Dead” Marathon character is in your eyes; although we think that Daryl Dixon may just win this one by a country mile!
