What should have been a routine pop fly during the bottom half of the third inning in the San Francisco Giants game against the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Friday night turned out to be anything but.
Umpire Tim Timmons pretended he was an NBA big man during the play and boxed out the Giants Brandon Crawford, preventing him from making what should have been an easy out.
Pablo Sandoval was in the area, and Timmons eyes remained fixated on him throughout the play. By attempting to get out of the way of Sandoval, he wound up blocking Crawford.
As a result the ball hit the ground and was deemed to be foul.
Because this just simply was already such a big error, Timmons then made it even bigger. If you look at the replay, the ball was clearly not a foul. After the Giants and Crawford were prevented by the ump from making a catch, the ball lands softly on the line, making it a fair ball.
San Francisco went on to win the game by a huge margin, 10-1, so the incident really didn’t cause any harm.
