There perhaps is no more clear cut evidence of how widespread the use of performance enhancing drugs currently is in the sporting world than this story. An 80 year old weightlifter has given a 2 year ban after testing positive for steroids.
Don Ramos of Colorado Springs, Colorado was attempting to break a world record for his age group at the Pan American Masters Weightlifting Championships in June when he failed a test for PEDs.
The 80 year old gym rat now will not be eligible to compete again until June of 2015.
Organizers for the event contracted the United States Anti Doping Agency to test all competitors above 35 years old at the event.
The USADA is the same organization that brought down Lance Armstrong.
Ramos is not the only person caught by the USADA at a masters weightlifting event. In 2011, “nine masters athletes [were suspended] for positive tests, including one in his 50s and three in their 60s.”
