Stress Reduction Tips That Are Proven to Work

stressStress is a major problem among adults and teenagers, but there are some tips that have been proven to work to reduce it. There are also things that parents can do to help their children handle some of the more problematic situations in life.

The news of the proven stress reduction techniques could not have come soon enough. In a recent survey, teenagers showed that they feel stress more than adults. It can have a knock-on effect in their future, as it impacts their sleeping, eating and exercising habits. This news comes from the American Psychological Association’s Stress in America report.

The survey has been used since 2007 when researchers started tracking these levels in adults and children across America. In the most recent one in 2013, over 1,000 teenagers and almost 2,000 adults were surveyed about how they felt during their normal day-to-day lives. The adults averaged 5.1 out of 10 and teenagers 5.8 during school time and 4.6 during summer holidays. The normal level is considered to be 3.9 out of 10.

The Huffington Post covered some of the downsides of living stressful lives. It cuts into “me” time and people start to neglect exercise and struggle to sleep. Quality of life is affected, and leads to people feeling miserable. People need to find better ways of handling this problem at work and in their homes, which is something these proven stress reduction tips will help do.

One of the best things to do is get some exercise. Dr. Matthew Stults-Kolehmainen notes that exercise boosts hormone production, including norephinephrine. These hormones boost the mood and help to reduce the level of tension in the muscles and brain. For those with little time on their hands, high-intensity burst training is worth doing.

The gut is also connected to stress. Those with high levels will usually find that gastrointestinal conditions are more common, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). For some t may be worth considering probiotic supplements to introduce healthy bacteria and heal problems that the gastrointestinal system is suffering from.

Similarly to focusing on the gut, it is also worth focusing on the diet. After a hectic and bad day, many people will reach for something sweet. The sugar rush is thought to control bad feelings. However, it is doing the exact opposite. While it offers a quick boost in mood, the drop as the sugar leaves the system means there is also a sudden drop in mood and anxiety and irritability can be worse, according to The Antianxiety Food Solution author Trudy Scott.

Sleep is also important. When a person runs on a few hours sleep, all feelings are multiplied and stress becomes a major issue. This is usually a cycle, too. As someone suffers more from a situation,  sleep can be harder to come by. The next day seems worse than the day before and the cycle continues. People are generally more productive after a good night’s sleep and situations are easier to deal with.

It is important for parents to help their teenagers get the right diet, enough exercise and enough sleep to deal with anxiety and irritable situations as well. These tips have all be proven to work at reducing stress levels.
