Chelsea Handler: The Axe or Quitting Her Talk Show?

Chelsea Handler
Chelsea Handler is reportedly not returning to her E! talk show Chelsea Lately. In Hollywood entertainers do not leave a long running gig unless there are talks of the talent getting the axe or a better opportunity has presented itself. Comedians are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. They can be found at such comedy clubs as the legendary Laugh Factory on Sunset Boulevard, the Comedy Union on Pico Boulevard, or the Improv on Melrose Avenue, and the list continues. Phenomenal comedians across the country are just waiting for a Chelsea Handler to drop the ball, so that they can get their shot. Knowing this, the question circulating throughout the industry is whether or not the famed comedian decided to quit her own talk show or she got the axe.

The popular late night talk show Chelsea Lately ran for eight years. Handler accomplished being the only female late night talk show host on the air. Fans of her show enjoyed her dry sense of humor that pushed the envelope. She was fearless and unapologetic as most comedians are and her fans adored her. Authoring such books as Man Up!: Tales of My Delusional Self Confidence, Are you there, Vodka? It’s Me Chelsea, Lies That Chelsea Handler Told Me, Uganda Be Kidding Me, and the list continues, the comedian has upped her value in the Hollywood market as a writer, actress, and producer as well.

Though Handler gained fans over the years, the comedian has also rubbed fans the wrong way. With humor that bordered racist, many believed the comedian was very comfortable with offending minorities in the name of comedy. Her most recent bad joke was at the Oscars where Handler was given access to Huffington Post’s Twitter account to give commentary on the big night to the followers. Handler reportedly claimed to be bored at the event and, apparently, just didn’t care anymore. She confused legendary actor Sydney Poitier for the recently deceased activist and leader Nelson Mandela. When actress Lupita Nyong’o won her very first Oscar for her performance in the film 12 Years A Slave, Handler immediately went in by stating actors Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt were going to adopt her because she is African. Every time the Oscar award-winning film 12 Years A Slave was mentioned on the grand stage, Handler tweeted to followers to buy her book Uganda Be Kidding Me. Huffington Post later had to explain to their followers that Handler’s views were not of Huffington Post. Handler made an apology, but no one knew to whom the apology was directed. Whether E! is giving Handler the axe or if Handler is quitting her talk show with the network, it is still unknown.

Handler is reported stating that she wants a show where she can say whatever she wants and be in complete control. Many of her fans would definitely tune in to support the comedian. Others, however, would be concerned with just how far Handler would go in terms of her jokes about minorities. Many view her humor as racist. Handler quickly defends herself by stating she is not a racist because she has dated a Black guy. When anyone finds themselves having to say the words “I am not a racist” has possibly done or said something that a racist would normally do or say. Just because one has dated outside of their culture does not mean the ignorance does not still exist within. Handler is reportedly ready to wash her hands of E!…and the feeling could be mutual.

Umm good “research,” Man Up! was written by Ross Mathews. I’m going to go out on a limb here and say she knows the difference between Poitier and Mandala, clearly sarcasm is lost on the writer of this article.

Obviously it was her decision, and wherever she goes, her fans will follow!

Yes, she will be missed. E! takes itself too seriously, and acts as if the world revolves around Hollywood egos. Chelsea needs to go somewhere where she can be herself. We will follow.

Whether she’s leaving voluntarily or because she was cancelled, it doesn’t matter. She will not be missed. The defend Jennifer Anniston while constantly attacking Angelina Jolie gets so old and tired. The racist jokes about Blacks are not funny. Good luck.
