Zac Efron was punched in the mouth in Los Angeles’ ghetto Skid Row area after the actor and his bodyguard ran out of gas in the city’s rough neighborhood. TMZ reported that Efron got into an altercation with a man who assumed that the actor and his bodyguard purposely threw a bottle in his direction. Supposedly, Efron and his bodyguard were headed to a restaurant at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday before the car broke down.
While the two men were waiting for a tow truck to arrive, Efron’s bodyguard tossed a bottle out of the window and it broke near a group of homeless individuals who then charged his car. The vagrants then initiated a fight with his bodyguard, during which the actor got out of the vehicle to defend his friend. Efron was punched in the face by one of the men and said it was the hardest he had ever been hit in his entire life. Police arrived to break up the brawl and did not make any arrests because of California’s “mutual combat” law.
The law states that if one person gives the other person a chance to stop fighting and they decline, the first person has a right to defend themselves.
Whether Efron’s story is accurate is debatable. Did he actually run out of gas, or was the “golden boy” searching for drugs? The High School Musical star has reportedly been to rehab twice for a cocaine and MDMA addiction, has suffered from a broken jaw, and now this.
Efron was noticeably intoxicated during the incident on Sunday, according to a TMZ source. Close friends of the actor say he is completely committed to maintaining his sobriety after his bout with drug abuse. It was during the promotion of The Lucky One that friends and co-workers began noticing his addiction issues. Efron even admitted to staying up for four days at a time while on drugs.
Did Efron suffer a relapse? It is hard to say. One thing is for sure though: Zac Efron was punched in the mouth in Skid Row, regardless of why he was there in the first place.
Many are hoping his side of the story is accurate, considering Efron has been trying to clean up his act and has had several projects in the works. The actor recently appeared in That Awkward Moment with Michael B. Jordan and Miles Teller, and is featured in the upcoming comedic movie Neighbors with Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne.
Skid Row has been known for its drug use, crime, and gang activity and has contributed to drawing in troubled stars such as Edward Furlong and Nick Stahl and pulling them down the rabbit hole. The area is considered to be one of the most treacherous locations nationwide. Thousands of homeless people sleep there on the streets each night just anxious to get into more trouble.
In order to continue on his path to success, Zac Efron needs to remain sober, focused, and especially avoid getting punched in the mouth in Los Angeles’ violent Skid Row neighborhood.
