Deryck Whibley, frontman of the popular Canadian rock band Sum 41, reportedly spent a month hospitalized because of his alcoholism. The Fat Lip singer confessed that his countless days of hard-drinking had finally caught up to him.

Whibley, 34, posted the above picture and several others online of himself lying in a hospital bed with cuts and bruises showing where IV tubes had been inserted into his arms in order for him to regain the necessary fluids his body so desperately needed after his liver and kidneys collapsed. The singer recalled the incident occurring during an otherwise ordinary night; he had gone to make himself another drink before watching a movie when he realized all was not right, shortly after which he collapsed. The next thing he knew, he awoke in a hospital bed surrounded by his mother and step-father, after his fiancee having had rushed him to the nearest medical center following his collapse. Whibley stated that he was sedated for the entire first week of his hospital stay.

The hard truth that he was hospitalized because of his alcoholism was without a doubt a wake-up call for Deryck Whibley. He has since spoken of his understanding that he must no longer engage in drinking alcohol. Regardless of how hard a task this will be for him to complete, considering he has confessed to have engaged in heavy drinking daily for many years, Whibley is heeding doctors’ warnings that even consuming one alcoholic drink will end his life for good. The entertainer views his hospitalization as a message that he needed to get his life back on track. He has advised others to take precautions when it comes to reckless drinking because no one is invincible.

Whibley claims to have regained his passion for creating music, which he plans to continue once his healing process is complete. Without the constant need for alcohol, the singer says his inspiration for writing songs has returned in full force and he already has some ideas brewing for his upcoming work.

Sum 41 first achieved success in mainstream music in 2001 after the release of their single Fat Lip, which was a track listed on their second album, All Killer No Filler. The song skyrocketed to the number one slot on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart. To this day, the band has not released a track which has garnered as much success as Fat Lip. In total, the band has released six studio albums, the most recent being their 2011 record Screaming Bloody Murder. They also have two awards under their belt from the Canadian award show The Juno Awards, Group of the Year in 2002 and Rock Album of the Year in 2005.

Whibley was briefly married to fellow Canadian rock star Avril Lavigne from 2006-2009. Their divorce was finalized in 2010.

Although Deryck Whibley certainly suffered a scare after being hospitalized because of his alcoholism, the singer seems to view it as a blessing in disguise. He feels he is now able to focus on what is important in life, and begin living every day to its fullest.
