Archie Panjabi is preparing her goodbye to The Good Wife after six seasons on the CBS drama series. The actress has played law firm investigator Kalinda Sharma since the show premiered in 2009 and she will exit the series after this season. Panjabi, 42, is departing CBS’ The Good Wife in order to star in a new pilot for 20th Century Fox TV.
In addition to her TV work, the versatile actress has appeared in such films as Bend It Like Beckham, The Constant Gardener, A Good Year, and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She is also set to star alongside Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the upcoming film, San Andreas.
Aside from the critical praise, Panjabi has also won an Emmy award, coupled with two additional Emmy nods as well as a Golden Globe nomination, for her portrayal of the morally and sexually ambiguous law firm investigator and confidante. She is considered a fan favorite and her character’s relationships with The Good Wife herself, Alicia Florrick, and Cary Agos, who is portrayed by Matt Czuchry of Gilmore Girls fame, are a major foundation of the series.
As Archie Panjabi prepares her goodbye to The Good Wife, it has also been announced that the actress has signed a talent deal with 20th Century TV, and therefore, she will not be staying on The Good Wife when her contract is up at the end of the current season. The plan is for Panjabi to headline a drama pilot for the Fall 2015 season.
The Good Wife show runners and creators Robert and Michelle King praised Panjabi for her talent and tireless work in helping to create and develop the character of Kalinda from the ground up as an enigmatic, powerful, and sexy character. Moreover, 20th Century Fox TV expressed their delight in signing the actress to a new development deal and were excited to see what characters Panjabi would bring to the forefront for them.
The Good Wife follows the titular character who is characterized by Alicia Florrick, played by Julianna Margulies of ER fame, as she returns to her previous occupation as an attorney after her politician husband, Peter Florrick, who is portrayed by Chris Noth of Sex and the City and Law & Order fame, is sent to jail on corruption charges.
As Archie Panjabi prepares her goodbye to The Good Wife, the impact of Panjabi and her character’s exit from the canvas is unknown at this time. However, it comes just one season after actor Josh Charles, who played lawyer Will Gardner, left the series in a shocking and unexpected manner. There has not been any news yet on the planned departure of Kalinda’s character. It remains to be seen if the character will exit in glory, disgrace, or defeat. Perhaps she will depart in a hail of bullets like Will or sacrifice herself for the greater good, such as going to prison for Cary’s sake. Given the shock and awe aftermath of Will’s death, it might be best to forego anymore tragedy this soon. However, the Kings have never been adverse to a challenge or pushing the envelope, and given that the drama has not yet been renewed for a seventh season, it would be wise to expect the unexpected from Kalinda’s upcoming departure from the series. Tune in and find out how it all plays out as the series airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on CBS.
