Cleveland

Nine non-African American Cleveland police officers are suing the city for alleged racial discrimination. The lawsuit stems from a 2012 shooting case.

The incident in question involved a 25-minute high-speed chase, ending with 137 bullets fired by the officers, who claimed to have chased the car after they heard what they believed to be gunfire. However, when the ordeal was all over, two African Americans were dead and no weapons were found in their vehicle.

Following an investigation into the shooting, the officers were placed on a three-day administrative leave and a 45-day cooling off period. While many of them were allowed to return to work months later, they remained on restrictive duty until June 2014.

The officers’ lawsuit alleges that the City of Cleveland has a history of treating non-African American officers more harshly than those that are African American, which they believe is racial discrimination. The lawsuit goes on to cite loss of wages and promotions because the officers were remanded to restrictive duty.
