A new theory in astronomy explaining that the earth is stationary has been proposed. It is being reported that Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari, a cleric in Saudi Arabia, has come out with this new hypothesis. While talking to students of a university in the United Arab Emirates, the Sheikh suggested this new, insightful theory. He described how he believed that the Earth is stationary and it does not rotate around its axis nor does it revolve around the Sun. He revealed to the obviously stunned students at the university, how the Sun revolves around the Earth. The Sheikh explained this concept as a simple fact of life, holding a cup of water in his hand. By showing how the Earth does not move around the Sun, the Sheikh made the suggestion of how the opposite is true.
The Sheikh asked the students to focus when he debunked the rotation and revolution of the earth, which has been regarded as universal truth. He addressed the students, while rotating the glass in his hand and pointing a finger of his other hand stationary, resembling a plane. The students were to imagine that the cup, resembled the earth, rotating (while turning the cup in his hand) and that he was leaving the Sharjah International airport in the UAE on a flight to China. The Sheikh then questioned that if the plane was to stop still in the air, why China would not be moving in the direction of the plane, as the earth would still be rotating.
Continuing to wave the cup in his hand, resembling the earth’s rotation, the Sheikh proposed another example. This time the scenario would be that of the earth rotating in the opposite direction. He argued that the plane would never be able to reach China from the UAE as China would be moving further from the plane due to earth’s rotation, in the case that it was real. The Sheikh then confirmed that there was no problem in flying to China and back from the UAE. Due to this, the Sheikh claimed that his theory stands proven and the Earth was not rotating around its axis or revolving around the Sun.
There have been various reactions to the Sheikh’s explanation. Some people actually agreed with his theory. In fact they went as far as quoting various ancient religious and non-religious texts, scriptures, and books. However, many people were also very pragmatic in their response. They stated facts like how the Sun is around 333,000 times heavier than Earth. Moreover, people referred to various scientific websites including NASA, suggesting how the Sun holds more than 99.8 percent of total mass of our solar system. They questioned the Sheikh’s theory by asking if the Sheikh suggests that the Earth is stationary, and implies that the Sun is moving around the Earth, how would the Earth manage to do that against the immense gravitational pull of the Sun due to its mass.
Scientific experts have said that the earth’s revolution, or the rotation around its axis, does not make any difference in the duration of the flight in any direction. This is because the atmosphere moves with the plane. Scientists at Cambridge University have explained that the atmosphere of the earth, is moving along with its surface below due to friction between the two. So, as we move with the surface of the earth, there is no distinction while flying in any direction.
Sheikh Bandar al-Khaibari had earlier disregarded NASA’s moon missions and the video of the astronauts landing on the moon as fiction and a product of Hollywood. He informed listeners that the astronauts never landed on the moon. This new theory in astronomy explaining that the earth is stationary was proposed by the Sheikh on the birthday of Galileo Galilei on February 15. The 16th century Italian astronomer was renowned for supporting the Copernican theory that the Sun is the center of our solar system. Galilei also said that the Earth revolves around the Sun at a time when the world believed otherwise as the universal truth.

Inertia is the answer. I question the validity of this school if no body there already knew this. What a world we live in. Lets just throw out any old bull that pops into our head, and claim it to be true, just because there is no one willing or able to tell us that we are WRONG!

The author needs to read the first few pages of any science text book. What this sheikh is saying is not a theory. It is not even a hypothesis. It is ignorant to even acknowledge this B.S. as being in the realm of science. And it is by no means new. It is, like most religious beliefs, very ancient nonsense and no longer relevant. I was going to say the author owed me several minutes of my life back, but I have now wasted more time commenting on this article than I did reading it. We’ll call it a draw.
You keep calling this baseless thoroughly disproven statement a theory. What studies has he conducted to provide evidence to make this a theory?
