Jonathan Crombie and His Life as an Actor

Jonathan Crombie
The Canadian actor, Jonathan Crombie, passed away Wednesday at age 48. Although it is very sad, there is so much more to remember about him. He was only 48-years-old and still very involved in the acting world. Reading about Crombie’s career makes it easy to see why most girls fell in love with him. His most well-known role was that of Gilbert Blythe in the Anne of Green Gables series. He was as charming as could be playing opposite Megan Follows, whose role was Anne Shirley, and it was a role he will always be remembered for portraying.

Crombie grew up in Toronto and his sister said that he loved musicals. As a kid, he was always singing and dancing. His father’s name is David Crombie, who is also the cabinet minister of Toronto and also the former mayor. His mom’s name was Shirley Ann and he had a sister named Carrie. They were a close family growing up and so proud of Crombie for all of the things he had done. He was very sensitive, caring, and ambitious, according to his sister.

Some of Crombie’s work includes Anne of Green Gables, 21 Jump Street, Bullies, Earth Final Conflict, Slings and Arrows, and The Good Wife. He was great at everything and described as a good as well as happy person. In 1997, he won a Dora Mayor Moore Award for his role as Valentine Coverly. There were many other projects he was part of, some of which he had written and starred in during his career.

Crombie was involved in many things in the Entertainment industry, but his latest work was mostly done on stage. The critically acclaimed production of This Could Be Love took Crombie on a North American tour. One of his other great roles was in the Broadway show The Drowsy Chaperone from 2008. During his life as an actor, he did what he enjoyed and was happy to be doing it.

Looking at the affect his character Gilbert Blythe had is completely heartwarming. He would actually answer to the name Gil when he would run into fans. He was very proud of that character, and still to this day, women from that generation think of him as their first love. He was everything a girl could ever hope for and had the perfect boy-next-door demeanor. Prince Edward Island, where Anne of Green Gables was filmed, is now a tourist destination. He will forever live on in the hearts of all the women that grew up in that time and will always be loved by them.

Crombie died April 15 of brain hemorrhage complications, and his family said that his organs were donated. It is very sad to see such a great actor and good person die so young. Yet, with all of the wonderful work he has done, he will never be truly gone. He did work that he was very proud of and anyone who has seen any of his work knows what an amazing talent he was. Jonathan Crombie’s life as an actor seemed to be full of love and life, and he will be forever remembered as just that.
