Following the box office success of the first Avatar film seems to be putting a lot of pressure on hit-maker James Cameron. Originally set to be released in December of 2016, Cameron’s camp has announced the sequel to hit theaters one year later in 2017. No officially word yet on why the delay in release, but the sequels have much to live up to since the first one is one of the highest grossing movie of all time.
It has been over six years since Avatar captured the attention and money from movie goers. Since its inception, there has been nothing but a large fan following of the precarious blue alien people called the Na’Vi. Though the story of human invaders trying to exploit the world’s resources for their own selfish gains was a little contrived from the story of Pocahontas, the movie still amassed a huge grossing in the box office worldwide. Both a visually stunning and well-acted movie with an array of A-list celebrities telling the futuristic sci-fi tale, Avatar was a visual masterpiece that utilize 3D special effects with breathtaking CGI and live action. Taking in over 2.7 billion dollars, Avatar was just another monumental success for the Titanic director.
With such a colossal success under his belt, it was no surprise that Cameron wanted to continue to explore more in the Avatar world. It was later announced by Cinema Blend that the public could expect, not one, but three sequels to further tell the tale of the Na’Vi and their fascinating world. Since each sequel is set to be released a year apart from one another, Cameron’s team of screen writers are set to make sure that each sequel follows cohesively with the next. With each new release, fanboys’ and girls’ will take in new experiences of the Na’Vi culture and new habitats to explore. A lot of work and pressure to live up to for Cameron to deliver three great films to topple the first.
So far, all the general public knows is that majority of the core cast will be returning for the next installments. Sigourney Weaver will reprise her role as Dr. Grace Augustine. Her death and revival will further be explained in the sequel as well. Protagonists Jake Sully, played by Sam Worthington, will also make his return as the lead. His love interest and ‘wife’ Neytiti, voiced by Zoe Seldana, is set to also be in the next film. Main antagonist Colonel Miles Quaritch will make his return to the big screen as well.
Although news of the returning cast and release dates are public knowledge, the plot for the sequels are still shrouded in mystery. Considering that the postpone for another year has been put into effect, the writers may still be tweaking the story of the Na’Vi. The actor’s schedules, advances in computer graphics, and all around technology advances to make the next installments even better than their predecessors.
Only time will tell what Cameron has in store for viewers and fans alike. Since Cameron first made history with his blockbuster The Abyss, it is only a matter of time before he decides to venture into the waters of the Na’Vi planet of Pandora. Hopefully the next installments feature plot that is as original and captivating as its special effects.
