The creator of Grey’s Anatomy, Shonda Rhimes, has been dealing with the enormous backlash that came immediately after fans were forced to bid their farewells to Patrick Dempsey’s character, Derek Shepherd, when he was killed off the show last Thursday. The amount of rage coming from angry fans of the ABC network television show was quite unbelievable. Unfortunately for Rhimes, all the anger was directed straight towards her. The killing off of the Grey’s Anatomy character was apparently serious enough for some to go as far as making death threats in order to bring Dempsey back, calling her names like TV serial killer, as if she literally murdered someone on national television and got away with it. Even though fans may be upset with her, for the most part, the Grey’s Anatomy creator, Rhimes is really excited for what the future has in store for the show.
As soon as the episode finished airing, Twitter blew up with comments coming from angry, disappointed, sad and some just plain confused fans. They turned Twitter into their own support group for Grey’s Anatomy watchers, addicted to Derek Shepherd. That night, Twitter became a place for them to vent their frustrations with other die-hard viewers of the show. Then they voiced their issues with Rhimes for not being their sponsor to help them through this devastating travesty, which had just ruined the lives of so many innocent, unsuspecting people.
For the amount of anger that the Grey’s Anatomy fans had towards the news of Dempsey’s character being removed from the show, one would have assumed that they were trying to right some sort of wrong that had be done against him. That was not the case at all.
The popular Grey’s Anatomy actor stated that he was made aware that his character was being written off the series around February or March and like everyone else, he was really surprised by the news. Despite his initial feelings towards the situation, Dempsey claimed that it all just unfolded in a very natural, organic type of way. He was really quite pleased with the way things had played out, and he thanked his loyal fans who watched the show for all their support.
Although the fans may not agree, the Grey’s Anatomy creator made a statement regarding Dempsey, saying that she is also going through her own grieving process from the loss of a great cast member. She also said that Dempsey is a wonderful and very talented actor, and everyone involved with the making of the series will surely miss his hard work and the contribution he made to the show over the last 10 years.
Rhimes, the creator of Grey’s Anatomy, said she is very excited for the show’s future. In her statement, she said that the Grey’s Anatomy family is now embarking on a new journey, stepping into a place that is completely different from anywhere that they have been up until this point. A new chapter is beginning for each of the characters in the show and the number of possibilities along with the multiple different directions that the story could go is endless.
Rhimes will continue to do what she does best, create stories, develop characters, and make the moves she believes are best for her creative works. The fans need to accept that there always comes a time when a change needs to occur in order for certain things to keep growing. Rather than fighting the Grey’s Anatomy creator, Rhimes, on her choice to cut Dempsey’s character, they should try to understand that the decision was made with the future in mind, to bring more excitement to the show.

Shondra wants to do whatever she pleases. Yes, of course she is the “creator” but there is one aspect that maybe she forgot…. without the fans, there would be no show. There comes a time when every show must end, and I am ready for it. I am disgusted with Ms. Rimes actions, and therefore will not continue to support her by watching the show. Any person who disagrees with her or wants a change… she kills off; George, Lexie, Mark, Derek.. The funny thing is the only person she hasn’t killed off, who gave her trouble was Isaiah Washington aka Dr. Burke. Kind of racist, don’t you think? Not only did she not kill him off, but she brought him back for a couple episodes in season 10! Izzie (Katherine Heigl) never made it back… Yes, she did shoot her own foot off sort to speak, but she did mention that she did want to wrap up her character’s story line.. But instead, Shondra just wrote material to have the characters in Grey’s mock Izzie. The point is that maybe Ms. Rimes is too spread thin with having three shows to write for, that she has too kill off such a beloved character instead of doing what Downton Abbey is doing, which is ending while it is still revered, and loved, and while the writing is still fresh. I’d rather a show end, that to have it become a tiresome, heep of garbage that is just on for profit. That two hour episode that was written after Derek Shepard’s (Patrick Dempsy) death, I don’t think that I could really blame on Shondra. Why? Because it seems like that the kind of crap that Betsy Beers would write. “Off the Map” anyone? Grey’s no longer is award winning, it no longer has the constant witty and memorable phrases that made us fall in love with the show. George is dead, Lexie is dead, Christian who tried to keep the animals from eating Lexie is gone, Mark is dead, Derek Christopher Shepard aka McDreamy is dead. Let the show just end! Let it be that Meredith was imagining Derek’s death, confused by something that was on tv, because of her Alzheimer, but let her grow old with Shepard, show flashbacks of their life… the kids grown up, maybe going into med school, the next generation…, Christian has won numerous Harper Avery’s, and finally living near Meredith, April and Jackson has many other children, and has started a foundation in honor of their first born, Katherine and the Chief (Webber) celebrated many happy years together, and has a teaching program named after him, Alex and Jo didn’t get married, but are living many happy years together, mentoring foster kids…, Maggie Pierce is doing good, having the talent like her bio mom Ellis, and the personality like Webber, like Christina, she is happy being alone, and with her work, but a little less awkward, and loves her niece and nephew. Owen and Amelia gets married, they keep each other in check, they have a child together, and adopts a kid who’s mother was a drug addict, something that Amelia can relate to. Bailey eventually becomes chief, Ben is nicknamed “Pops” by the residents, and falls into the role that was Richard Webbers, and fosters the new coming residents into becoming their own!
Life is not perfect, especially on Grey’s Anatomy, but through all their challenges, they choose to remember the good, and “the carousel does stop turning, if only you choose it to do so. And that… is the Anatomy of Grey’s!
My friends and I will never watch another episode of anything Shondra Rhimes writes. Derek was the glue that held the show together and the only reason we watched the show! Rhymes is a disposable
