Jacksonville police officers shot and killed a man earlier this morning, May 12. Details about the shooting have still not been released, but a witness said the suspect was African-American.
The shooting happened in the 6100 block of Du Clay Road, at the Westside apartment complex, which is located at Planter’s Walk, west of Blanding Boulevard. A neighbor told media outlets that the area is known to be unsafe, and that they heard six shots fired after 10:00 a.m.
The suspect’s body was seen outside one of the apartment buildings, next to an air conditioning unit, according to a witness who spoke to The Florida Times-Union. None of the officers were injured, but the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office released a statement saying that the suspect succumbed to his injuries later at the hospital. The apartment complex management is also not allowing any media personnel on the property.
The cold case unit, part of the homicide unit, is investigating the police-involved shooting. The sheriff’s office also used Periscope, a live video streaming app, to brief and address the media. This shooting is the sixth police-involved shooting this year in the city.
