FIFA Women's World Cup

Team USA has emerged as the undisputed champion at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup after 16 long years. The wait was ended July 5, 2015 in emphatic fashion as team USA defeated Japan 5-2 with the huge margin of victory. Captain and Midfielder Carli Lloyd has been the backbone and architect of the team’s success throughout the tournament. Lloyd especially had one of the most memorable games of her life as she scored three goals in the title decider game. The first half of the match saw a crackling game from team USA as they scored four times in the first 16 minutes. The star performer being Captain Lloyd as she scored twice in the first five minutes and then a David Beckham style goal from close to half line from 54 yards away in the 16th minute.

This is the third World Cup title for the USA Women’s football team as they had won the first title in 1991 and then again in 1999. Team USA defeated the top ranked team of Germany in the semifinals to reach the finals. Japan defeated England as they made it to their second straight FIFA Women’s World Cup final. The same two teams had met in the 2011 FIFA Women’s World Cup final match when USA had lost to Japan 3-2 on penalties after the game was tied at 2-2. Their defeat against Japan in 2011 spurred the United States team even more to push for a win over Japan this time. Many commentators had regarded this game as a revenge match in which Team USA has emerged as the World Champion at the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup after a 16-year long hiatus.
