A three-day-old baby was mauled to death in California by two male dogs which are said to be a mix of pit bull and shar-pei. Reportedly, the infant had been left on the couch just a few seconds when the dogs came through the back door and attacked the little girl. Unfortunately, the child’s mother left the back door open due to the heat. The 33-year-old woman thought her brother’s dogs were tied up in the yard and the child would be out of harm’s way. The little girl died on Monday, shortly after the attack at a local hospital.
At this time, no one has been charged, however, the investigation is ongoing. The owner of the two pit bull mixes surrendered the animals to the Central California Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) where the dogs are expected to be euthanized. It is not clear whether the dogs have attacked previously, but due to their actions on Monday, a mom has lost her daughter.
After learning of the horrible tragedy, people criticized the pit bull breed. This breed of dogs has maintained a bad rap for decades for different maulings that have taken place over the years. Pit Bull owners believe that the animal’s behavior is a result of the training the dog has received and when raised properly these can be some of the friendliest and most loving pets. Lovers of this breed have blamed the mother for being irresponsible while others say the dogs were unprovoked and are dangerous canines.
The newborn is the second person to die from a pit bull attack on Monday. A New Haven woman named Jocelyn Winfrey died after both eyes were bitten out, and several limbs mutilated, when a friend’s pit bulls (also identified as American bulldogs) mauled her. The 53-year-old woman was given a 50/50 chance of survival after the attack before she succumbed to her injuries on Monday. Winfrey was with the dogs’ owner, Dr. Hamilton Hicks when she was violently attacked, and reportedly, the pit bulls then turned on their owner. According to New Haven Alderman Brian Wingate:
My next-door neighbor started yelling, saying ‘the dog is attacking a female across the street.’ Neighbors ran over to help. We were jumping over, throwing rocks at the pit bulls as they were just basically eating her up.
Although many people have been victims of the pit bull breed, the majority are not infants. However, in February 2011, a baby was killed by a pet pit bull in Kalamazoo. Darius Tillman was 15-days old at the time of his death. The infant was mauled to death by the family’s one-year-old dog named Buster. According to the boy’s mother, Mallory Wildig, she found her son “mauled and partially consumed by Buster.”
Later, on Sept. 5, 2011, a two-week old baby boy was mauled to death by a family pit bull-mix. Brayden McCollen was in his baby carrier on the floor when the pit bull mix pushed through a pair of French doors to reach the baby. Reportedly, the canine sniffed him just seconds before he mauled the infant to death. Just one day prior, another infant boy was mauled to death in his Cypress, TX home. The 13-day-old baby was attacked while rocking in a baby swing in the living room.
Despite the many claims that pit bulls are loyal family pets, many stories can be found where people as young as a few days upward to well-aged adults have been mauled to death by these canines. On Monday, another baby was mauled to death by a mix of the breed.
The owner of Conyers K-9 Academy, Danny Lowery, told reporters “a dog will tell you before it bites.” However, the argument which supports that pit bulls frequently fail to communicate intention prior to an attack has been well documented by several humane groups. The breed may not bark, growl or stare before it attacks its victim. Due to selective breeding for the purposes of dogfighting, pit bulls also have been known to ignore traditional signs of submission and appeasement among other dogs.

Good grief. The haters are here. Anyone see pictures on f these dogs?? I didn’t? The Sharpei was evident, “pit bull” not so much. But “Sharpei attack” just doesn’t have the same “headline appeal”. Let’s point out one of the biggest PROVEN factors in aggression… Chaining or tying up dogs. These were chained dogs. There are OVER 20 PEER REVIEWED scientific articles provide no that keeping a dog on a chain is one of the BIGGEST causes of aggression. Of course what happened to this innocent baby was a tragedy.
Why have a dog if you are going to keep him on a chain? What’s the point?
With regards to “disreputable shelters” not operating “honestly ” when it comes to pit bulls, I am not sure what you mean. Ever shelter I have worked with is forthcoming with ALL their dogs and the history (if they have it) . Furthermore, in 15 years of volunteering in shelters and walking, feeding, petting COUNTLESS pit bulls, not ONE ever so much as growled at me. I had a chihuahua attack my pants once and a husky try to bite my hand. So if it’s “genetics” and they are “mutants” like you morons say, how is it I am still alive with all appendages? Shouldn’t the “terrible genetics” of ONE of those “monsters” I worked with have kicked in?
The dogs responsible were euthanized. No other dog (or Sharpei) had ANYTHING else to do with this tragedy. Why exactly should innocent dogs be held responsible for the actions (and poor judgement of the owners) of another? That’s tantamount to being robbed by a white man and finding incarcerating ANY and ALL white men as an acceptable solution. Ridiculous
Any yet folks still support this breed. I wonder how many babies have to die like this for people to wake up. You are an IDIOT if you own this type of dog.

It would also be nice if these dogs weren’t vilified by every news outlet just so they could “get the story”. This is a tragic terrible thing that also was totally preventable if that poor baby’s mom wasn’t out wandering around in the middle of the night. No sane person leaves their baby or child alone with any dog at any time. Irresponsibility is the problem with a large number of dog attacks in general. Pit bulls are not the problem. Irresponsible owners are. My condolences to the family. Sad all the way around.
Victim blaming is what is sad. And yes, “irresponsibility is the problem”. Irresponsible legislators that continue to allow these mutants into our neighborhoods, irresponsible breed advocates and promoters that deny the truth about these “family fur babies”, AND Irresponsible (delusional?) owners that believe they’re in complete control. We can’t legislate responsibility (or ban stupidity) but we can most certainly legislate, ban or control the ownership of dangerous canines. We do it all the time for anything proven to be hazardous, yet not for these known killers of INNOCENT babies! Why not?

I wish the names of the humane organizations who had the integrity to post the truth about Pit Bulls had been named. There are too many disreputable shelters out there nowadays, and it would be refreshing to see one that operates with honesty in mind when it comes to Pit Bulls.
