Police Chief Identifies San Diego Gang Unit Officers Involved in Shooting [Updated]

The San Diego police officers shot on July 28, 2016, are Johnathan DeGuzman and Wade Irwin. The shootings took place at around 11:00 p.m. PDT, during a traffic stop in the southeastern neighborhood of Southcrest.

On July 29, San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman released the officer’s names and information during a press conference just before noon. She reported that the deceased officer was DeGuzman, and the wounded officer was Irwin. They were members of the Elite Gang Unit, according to NBC News.

Irwin is a nine-year veteran of the police force. He is 32 years old, married, and has a 19-month-old child. Zimmerman stated Irwin is expected to survive. She added that he is expected to have a long recovery process from his wound(s).

DeGuzman was a 16-year veteran. The 43-year-old leaves behind two children and his wife. There is no information about a memorial, however, during the briefing, Chief Zimmerman extended condolences to the slain officer’s family.

Earlier reports indicated that both of the officers were shot in their upper torsos. According to CBS News, the officers notified dispatch that they were making a traffic stop. Shortly thereafter, dispatch received a call that DeGuzman and Irwin needed emergency cover.

Zimmerman stated one suspect was in custody. USA Today indicated he was Hispanic and was wounded during the gun battle. It was possible the second suspect had been located. It was believed he was in a house surrounded by San Diego SWAT officers.

UPDATE: According to FOX News, SWAT officers used a loudspeaker in an attempt to encourage the suspect, Marcus Antonio Cassani to surrender. They also detonated several gas bombs, broke windows, and pounded on the roof to draw him out to no avail.

SWAT officers moved on to another home about two blocks away. However, the suspect was not there. Cassani was finally arrested at another location. He is being held on an arrest warrant issued from an Anaheim, Calif. court.

Zimmerman explained the police were still investigating whether Cassani had any role in the shootings. She also gave an update on the first suspect in custody. Jesse Gomez, 52, was shot in the chest during the shootout with police. He is in a local hospital and is listed in critical.

Due to the ongoing investigation, Zimmerman did not elaborate on the circumstances surrounding the possible motive for the death of Officer DeGuzman and the wounding of Officer Irwin.
