The brother of murdered six-year-old child beauty pageant contestant JonBenet Ramsey has settled a defamation case he had against CBS for $750 Million regarding a documentary they aired in 2016 about her death. JonBenet was murdered over 22 years ago.
The lawsuit by Burke Ramsey was filed in Dec. 2016, two months after the documentary ‘The Case Of: JonBenet Ramsey’ first aired. The documentary insinuated that when Ramsey was nine-years-old, he murdered JonBenet.
The lawsuit stated that any claim that Burke killed his sister was defamatory and false. It also mentioned that Ramsey had no part in the murder of his sister.
On December 26, 1996, child beauty queen JonBenet was discovered dead in her home after she was reported, by her parents, missing hours before. Her father, John Ramsey, discovered her in the basement with a fractured skull and strangled. The case made worldwide news for its brutal nature and incredulous circumstances.
The documentary was aired in 2017 to concur with the 20th anniversary of the little girl’s death. Forensic experts were featured and they alluded to the possibility that Burke murdered JonBenet accidentally. The prosecutors, after a thorough investigation, cleared the entire Ramsey family of any wrongdoing.
Lin Wood, Ramsey’s lawyer, tweeted about the settlement. He stated that they have come to an amicable agreement and both sides came to terms with the resolution. He then stated that he has been handling, for 20 years, defamation cases for the Ramseys and hopefully this was the last one.
A spokesperson for CBS stated that the case was resolved and there would be no further comments.
The settlement was not divulged. The complaint stated that Ramsey was asking for compensatory damages not lower than $250 million and approximately $500 million on punitive damages.
