Pawel Adamowicz the mayor of Gdansk, Poland died on Jan. 14, 2019, after he was stabbed in the stomach and heart at a charity event. He was 53 years old.
Thousands at the charity event witnessed a man rush the stage on Sunday, Jan. 13 and stab Adamowicz who was rushed to the hospital and underwent a five-hour surgery. Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
Adamowicz was raised in Gdansk and has been involved with politics his entire life. His first job in politics was in 1990 as a member of the Gdansk council. He then served as Gdansk’s mayor for over 20 years.
Adamowicz was at the “Great Orchestra of Christmas” which is a children’s hospital charity event, which raised money for medical equipment.
During the program finale, the mayor was on stage thanking the audience for attending, when he was attacked. The suspect is a 27-year-old Gdanski resident who has a criminal history and has previously been in prison.
Dariusz Wolodzko, Gdansk city press agent, reported that the alleged suspect rushed the stage yelling while he blamed the mayor and his political party for his imprisonment and conviction.
A local television news station covering the event filmed the suspect displaying a weapon and yelling. He was shouting “Adamowicz is dead.”
Joachim Brudzinski, Poland’s Interior Minister, wrote on Twitter that the attack was barbaric.
On his Facebook page, Donald Tusk, European Council President, asked everybody to pray for Adamowicz.
On Sunday, photos shared on Facebook, Twitter, and social media showed lines of people waiting to donate blood. Hundreds of people responded to a Facebook post asking for O RhD negative blood, which is the universal blood type.
Adamawicz Poland’s Progressive voice and was a staunch supporter of LGBT rights, minority groups, and immigrants.
Adamowicz posted on his Instagram right before he was stabbed a photo showing the crowd at the charity event holding white lights. Hundreds of people have sent written their condolences on the post.
