
For years he was known as the man who was the main interviewer of wrestling superstars. He interviewed everybody from the Undertaker to Hulk Hogan. “Mean Gene Okerlund a WWE Hall of Famer Dies at 76.
The WWE issued a statement stating that they were sad to learn about Okerlund’s death and sent out their condolences to his friends, family and the fans. The cause of death was not announced.
Okerlund was given his nickname “Mean Gene” by fellow wrestler Jesse Ventura. Okerlund started his career with the American Wrestling Association by doing interviews. In 1984 he switched to the WWE.
The WWE stated Okerlund was known for his questions. They were never easy. He will be remembered for his interview with WWE Superstar Hulk Hogan.
Hogan paid tribute to Oakerlund on his Twitter by saying that he loves him, and was very sad that Oakerlund, the Hall of Famer had died.
As Okerlund gained more popularity he moved to the side of the ring where he hosted shows and provided commentary on shows such as “Prime Time Wrestling,” “Wrestling Challenge,” “Tuesday Night Titans,” and “All-American Wrestling.” In 1985 at the first WrestleMania he sang the National Anthem.
In 1003, Okerlund left the WWE and went to the WCW. He returned in 2001 to the WWE. His return was at WrestleMania 17 the “Gimmick Battle Royal.” Okerlund recently appeared on “Raw 25” which was a show celebrating “WWE RAW’s” 25th anniversary. Okerlund also appeared as a cast member on “Legends House” which appeared on the WWE Network.
Wrestlers both past and present took to their Twitter account to pay tributes to the man known as “Mean” Gene Okerlund the WWE Hall of Famer who has died Wednesday at 76.
