Frankie “Frankie Boy” Cali, the acting boss of the Gambino crime family, was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds outside his home in New York on the evening of March 13, 2019. He was 53 years old.
Police received a 911 call at 9:20 pm ET on March 13 about a shooting in Staten Island. There, they found Cali who was shot six times.
Law enforcement said it was reported at the time of the shooting; a blue pickup truck was seen leaving the area.
Cali was brought to Staten Island University Hospital by EMS where he was pronounced dead.
An official of the New York Police Department told CNN that Cali was believed to be the boss of the Gambino crime family.
Police state there is an active investigation, and no arrests have been made.
After the former Gambino leader John Gotti was sent to prison, Cali took over. Unlike Gotti who enjoyed being in the spotlight in the 80s and 90s, Cali preferred to keep a low profile.
Cali is the first crime family boss from New York to be shot dead in 34 years. The last was Paul Castellano in 1985. Castellano was shot to death in Manhattan after he arrived at Sparks Steakhouse.
It was reported Gotti and Sammy “The Bull” Gravano allegedly watched the execution nearby.
