Potato producers are suffering a poor crop year, following weather that was both cold and wet. These conditions have left farmers worried about how they will be able to supply the potatoes needed to keep up with demand. With this potato shortage, the United States could find itself dealing with a French Fry shortage as well, something that many fast food eaters will be less than happy to hear.
According to The Hill, crops across the U.S. and Canada were ruined thanks to less than satisfactory weather conditions that have producers trying to buy potatoes from growers across the continent. The problem is that at this point a French fry shortage is almost guaranteed if they can not find a supplier.
Considering there is already an impressive French fry demand that can barely be met with the current potato supplies, this new shortage seems like a hard hit for many fans of this salty, fried treat. While Travis Blacker, a director of industry-relations, has stated that, “French fry demand has just been outstanding lately, and so supplies can’t meet the demand,” there are other industry professionals who say that there should be enough potatoes thanks to “East Coast products” to actually prevent a shortage from happening.
For French fry lovers, a potential shortage seems like a distinct possibility, however, there is still hope that enough potatoes will be procured to handle the demand this winter.
