Including longtime Trump Organization finance chief Allen Weisselberg and Senior Vice President and Controller Jeffrey McConney.

Property tax deductions help businesses and individuals deduct the amount they pay in property taxes from their business or personal income tax. An outside accountant who spent years preparing tax returns for Trump and the company also testified.

Property Tax Exemption: If you own a business, you can apply for an exemption on your business property. This means that instead of paying taxes on the value of your property, you’ll pay less because it is exempt from taxation. The tax law allows these exemptions so that businesses have the incentive to invest in real estate. Also to contribute positively to economic growth.

They engaged in a “sham” to hide how much money they were making from their properties, like hotels and golf courses. The president is not charged with any crimes but faces potential impeachment if he’s found guilty by Congress. The president’s former lawyer, Michael Cohen, pleaded guilty to charges of bank fraud, tax evasion, and campaign finance violations. He claimed that Trump directed him to make payments in 2016.

The Trump Organization was guilty by a federal jury in New York City of state and federal tax fraud charges.

The case centered around how much they paid for the land and how much they actually owed in taxes. The conviction is a validation for New York prosecutors, who have spent three years investigating the former president and his businesses. Although the penalties don’t expect to be severe enough to jeopardize the future of Trump’s company.

As punishment, the Trump Organization has to pay a fine of up to $1.6 million. Trump, said the case against his company exists as part of a politically motivated “witch hunt.” Trump himself was not on trial but prosecutors alleged he “knew exactly what was going on” with the scheme. Although he and the company’s lawyers have denied that.

The case against the company was built largely around testimony from the Trump Organization’s former finance chief, Allen Weisselberg. The former finance chief said he manipulated the company’s books and his own compensation package to illegally reduce his taxes.  Weisselberg testified in exchange for a promised five-month jail sentence.

Though he testified as a prosecution witness, Weisselberg also attempted to take responsibility on the witness stand. Also saying nobody in the Trump family knew what he was doing. During his closing argument, prosecutor Joshua Steinglass attempted to refute the claim that Trump knew nothing about the scheme.
