Apple’s newest addition, the MacBook Neo is not only the most affordable laptop, it is also the most repairable laptop in the Apple family.

iFixit sells parts and tools, in addition to publishing repair guides for consumer electronics. It also offers ratings on how easy devices are to fix and keep running. Dell Tech and Lenovo Group use these ratings to improve the repairability of their products.

On Friday, iFixit published a teardown of the new MacBook addition.

There are key changes from previous MacBooks, such as the attachment of the keyboard and batteries with screws instead of glue or rivets. The camera and fingerprint sensor are also easy to swap out.

It seems that Apple is targeting the same markets as Google with its low-cost Chromebook.

iFixit’s chief executive Kyle Wiens says Chromebooks are repaired frequently, and some school districts have student interns fix them.

iFixit gave the MacBook Neo a 6 out of 10 on the repairability scale. One reason is that the 8 gigabytes of DRAM are soldered to the circuit board with the main processing chip. This is similar to all of Apple’s Mac designs, but it makes the New impossible to upgrade the memory easily.

It will also make it more difficult to run artificial intelligence applications as it continues to grow more complex. Apple could improve the offering by including an additional layer of memory chips so users can upgrade, according to Wiens.

“Apple’s future for privacy-centered AI has to be local models. I would argue this is a flaw across Apple’s entire Mac product line,” Wiens says.

Apple Trade-In Surge

This week, with the launch of the MacBook Neo, Apple experienced a trade-in surge.

A reliable source told MacRumors the quantity of Macs traded in this week increased over 1oo percent compared to previous weeks. This was likely due to the demand for the M5 MacBook Air and the MacBook Neo.

Older, low-end models dominated the trade-ins, suggesting customers are seeking an upgrade to one of those two releases over the MacBook Pro. This is the biggest surge of trade-ins since the launch of the first Apple silicon Macs released between 2020 and 2021.
