KANSAS CITY, Missouri — Kansas City Chiefs football players are in route to Arrowhead Stadium for an emergency meeting as reports from every major news media outlets awaits the release of the player’s name that police say shot his girlfriend, critically wounding her and then shot himself in an apparent suicide. Kansas City Chiefs’s home stadium was placed on lock-down ever since early morning.

Update: Apparently, Belcher’s girlfriend did not survive the shooting.

CBS just reported that the player was 25-year-old, Jovan Belcher. Some time this morning, Belcher shot himself at the team’s training facility after shooting his girlfriend at another location.

The female victim is reported to be in critical condition. Local reports have identified the female victim as the player’s girlfriend.

Police have not released the identity of the player, but have confirmed that he is a 25-year-old team member of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Local reports say police responded to a residence where a woman said her daughter was shot by her daughter’s boyfriend, who is a Kansas City Chiefs player.

Police reportedly arrived at Arrowhead Stadium to find a male with a handgun to his head in the parking lot of the practice facility, speaking to a few people, according to reports.

Police tell KCTV that the male with the gun is the suspect in the shooting at the first location.

Here’s what we know about this unbelievable tragedy. According to KCTV-5 News in Kansas City, the player shot and killed his girlfriend at a house near 54th street and Chrysler Avenue on Saturday morning.

Then the player drove to a practice facility near the team’s main campus and took his own life. The team’s Arrowhead practice facility was evacuated.

“We can confirm that there was an incident at Arrowhead earlier this morning,” the team said in a statement this morning. “We are cooperating with authorities in their investigation.”

According to FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer, the name of the player will not be revealed until his family is informed. Glazer also reports that Chiefs players have been asked to assemble at the team’s main facility so that they can be informed of all the details.

The Chiefs are scheduled to host the Carolina Panthers on Sunday. According to the Charlotte Observer, the NFL has told the Carolina Panthers to fly to Kansas City as planned to play the game.
