Shootings Involving Police Officers in Los Angeles Over the Weekend

There were three separate shootings involving police officers over the weekend in Los Angeles, California. The LAPD is currently investigating the shooting incidents.

On Saturday evening, Cypress Park was the scene of the first shooting. A suspect with an outstanding warrant was pursued by the police for 15 minutes before the chase ended.

According to the police, the suspect shot at them four or more times and pumped a shotgun. The suspect reportedly threw various items at news photographers and taunted the police. At the end of the chase, the police shot and killed the person they had been pursuing.

Then, on early Sunday morning, according to reporter Brittney Hopper of KCAL9, the police were involved in a second shooting. The suspect ended up taking his own life.

Responding to a call, police officers headed to the 6600 block of Denver Avenue at approximately 6:15 a.m.  According to Los Angeles Police Department Officer Norma Eisenman, the suspect there reportedly fired at them .

The third of the shootings occurred at about 3:15 p.m. on Sunday. Police answered a call about a man who was reportedly cutting himself with a knife on a bus in the vicinity of Victory Boulevard and Haskell Avenue.

According to the police, when they tried to approach the suspect, he first tried to run away, then became aggressive when the officers got closer to him. The police fired at the suspect, killing him.

Alan Hamilton with the LAPD said that it was “unusual” to have three officer-related shootings [OIS] “in one day.” However, he added that “our officers were clearly threatened.”

The LAPD stated that the numbers of such OIS incidents is actually down when compared to the same time last year. There were 47 such OIS incidents in 2013 while this year, there have only been 28 so far, with 22 people being struck.

In the three separate shooting by the police over the weekend, no officers suffered injuries. The three shootings resulted in the deaths of three people, with one of the three taking his own life.
