Jazmine Barnes’ Murder Was Mistaken Identity

Barnes20-year-old Eric Black Jr. was arrested on Saturday in Texas, charged in the murder of Jazmine Barnes.

7-year-old Jazmine Barnes was killed in a drive-by shooting in Houston. Another man, whose name has not been released, is presently in police custody. No charges against the individual in custody have been made.

Eric Black appeared in court Sunday morning and faces capital murder charges. He was wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs. The judge ordered that no bail be offered.

On Dec. 30 in Houston, Texas, a car pulled up next to the vehicle that Barnes and her family were seated. While they were at a traffic light, a gunman shot into the car. Barnes died from a shot to her head. Her mother, LaPorsha Washington, was shot in the arm and expected to recover.

Eric Black Jr., age 20, was charged with capital murder and appeared in court Sunday morning. He was wearing handcuffs and an orange jumpsuit. Black was ordered held without bail.

It is alleged that Black drove the getaway car and was not the one who shot and killed Barnes.

Black was stopped by police after failing to use his turn signal. The police arrested him for possessing marijuana. At that time, a tipster identified Black as being involved in the shooting.

He confessed that he drove the car that was used in the shooting, but it was the passenger who actually shot the gun. He also stated that the gun from the crime was at his house and gave police permission to get it. Police retrieved the gun suspected gun used in the shooting and matched it with the shell case that was retrieved at the site of the crime.

Barnes’ mother originally stated the shooting was a racial attack. Her daughter, who is 15-years-old, told police that the shooter drove a red truck and was a man a white man.

The police released a sketch of the alleged shooter who appeared to be white, thin and had a light beard.

Black is African American. The man other man in custody, who is the alleged gunman, is also African American.

At a Sunday press conference, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that Jazmine Barnes’ death was because of “mistaken identity.” No other details have been disclosed.
