On Wednesday night, April 22, 2020, tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma and Texas killing at least six people.
After a tornado swept through Madill, Oklahoma, two deaths and several injured were confirmed by an official with the Marshall County Emergency Management team after. The tornado touched down as people were heading home from work in two manufacturing plants.
Madill is 10 miles from the border of Texas. There is a video that shows a massive tornado throwing sheet metal and debris into the air.
At least three people have died in Polk County, Texas. The hardest-hit area was Onalaska. Search and rescue is still ongoing at this time. The tornadoes injured 20-30 people, according to officials.
Governor of Texas Greg Abbott confirmed the tornado damage in Polk County. According to NWS, the governor stated there was a “large and extremely dangerous” tornado near Sebastopol at 6:45 p.m. ET.
Abbott reported in a statement, immediate support will be provided to the areas that were devastated by the tornadoes by the Texas Division of Emergency Management and other state agencies that are working with local officials. “The state has already deployed response teams and medical resources to help Texans in need and to provide assistance to these communities. Our hearts are with our fellow Texans tonight and the state will continue to do everything it can to support those affected by this severe weather.”
Due to the significant damage to residential and commercial structures and to public infrastructure, a disaster declaration has been issued for Polk County.
Another tornado touched down near the Louisiana border in Jasper, Texas.
According to Louisiana officials, a man died after being swept away by floodwaters. He was discovered 60 yards downstream.
Twenty-four tornadoes touched down across Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi by 7 a.m. Thursday morning.
Currently, there are tornado watches in effect for Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi, and Florida until 2 p.m. Thursday.
Earlier this month, 34 people were killed when twisters broke out in Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.
