
Best known for his roles in “Top Gun” and the “Back to the Future” franchise, actor James Tolkan, passed away on Thursday, March, 27, 2026 in Saranac Lake, New York. He was 94 years old.
The news of his death as announced by a spokesperson for the family and writer-producer Bob Gale on the franchise website.
Tolkan Career
Tolkan’s career spanned over five decades. The actor’s first television credit came from the 1960 series “Naked City.” His last credit was for the 2015 film “Bone Tomahawk.”
The actor is most known for his role in the “Back to the Future” trilogy. He played principal Strickland in the 1985 original and 1989 sequel. In 1990, he returned as the grandfather as his character in part three.
The actor also played Commander Tom Jardian, “Stinger” alongside Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan in Tony Scott’s 1986 action film “Top Gun.”
Over the years, he also held roles in “WarGames,” “Abduction,” “Stiletto,” “The Amityville Horror,” “They Might Be Giants,” “Armed and Dangerous,” “Off Beat,” and more.
He also played roles in television shows such as “Leverage,” “The Pretender,” “A Nero Wolfe Mystery,” “Nowhere Man,” “Early Edition,” “The Wonder Years,” “Cobra,” and others.
Childhood and School
The actor was born on June 20, 1931 in Calumet, Michigan. He attended Coe College and the University of Iowa after joining the U.S. Navy. He journeyed to New York where the actor studied at The Actors Studio with Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg.
Tolkan was survived by his wife, Parmelee.
