
Sony has announced price increases for PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal, claiming “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.”
The price increases go into effect on April 2, 2026 are are “a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide,” says Isabelle Tomatis, Vice President of Global Marketing at Sony Interactive Entertainment.
PS5 Price Increase Explanation
Tomatis says, “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal remote player globally. We know that price changes impact our community, and after careful evaluation, we found this was a necessary step to ensure we can continue delivering innovative, high-quality gaming experiences to players worldwide.”
In the United States, the PS5 will cost $649.99. The digital edition will be $599.99, and the PS5 Pro will be $899.99.
In the U.K., the same console will cost £569.99. The digital edition will be £519.99 and the Pro will cost £789.99.
In Europe the gaming console will increase to €649.99. The digital edition will be €599.99, and the Pro will be €899.99.
In Japan the Sony console will cost ¥97,980. The digital edition will be ¥89,980, and the Pro will cost ¥137,980.
The PlayStation Portal remote player will be $249.99 in the U.S., £219.99 in the U.K, €249.99 in Europe, and ¥39,980 in Japan as of April 2.
Where to Purchase Before April 2
The new price increase will not go into effect until April 2, so there is a window of opportunity to save some money if the purchase is made before then.
The best deals available right now include the PS5 Fortnite Bundle for $449, the digital Fortnite bundle at $399, the Pro for $749, and the PlayStation Portal for $199.99.
There seems to be a growing concern that gaming is becoming too expensive. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella told Edge that gaming is trending towards hobby status.
“A bigger portion of the market is going to people who are more affluent, have higher incomes, and the lower-income parts of the market are really struggling. That premium gaming space is leaning more and more on the affluent consumer.”
